From Industrial to Incredible

Back in 2011, what was once just another industrial site along the Cuyahoga River transformed into the 7-acre haven we now know as Rivergate Park. This riverside park came to life through a partnership between the Cleveland Rowing Foundation and The Trust for Public Land, transforming forgotten industrial space into a public recreation area.

Found in Cleveland's Flats district, Rivergate Park is now part of the city's waterfront development, adding green space to an area that was once primarily industrial.

Life on the Water

The park offers good views of the Cuyahoga River and provides access for water activities. No matter if you're into kayaking, canoeing, rowing, dragon boating, or trying to keep your balance while stand-up paddleboarding, this is your place.

The Cleveland Rowing Foundation maintains a boathouse here that serves everyone from high school crew teams to weekend warriors looking to try something new. There are boat slips specifically designed for kayaks and smaller watercraft, making it super easy to launch your adventure.

Just know that the Cuyahoga is an active waterway with both fun-seekers and commercial vessels sharing the space. Always paddle on the right side of the river to keep things safe for everyone.

What You'll Find

Rivergate Park isn't just about water sports. Walking paths trace the riverfront, fantastic for a leisurely stroll while watching massive ships navigate the Cuyahoga. On clear days, you can see Cleveland's skyline, including Terminal Tower, from the park.

The open grassy areas make ideal picnic spots (and yes, there are recycling and trash bins to keep things tidy). Kids have plenty of space to run around, but you won't find playground equipment here.

When nature calls, restrooms are available on the outside of the Merwin's Wharf restaurant building.

Beyond Boats

While the water activities might steal the spotlight, don't miss the Crooked River Skatepark - a smooth, well-designed space where skateboarders and cyclists show off their skills. With various ramps and a bowl that regulars describe as both challenging and fun, it's a magnet for wheel enthusiasts.

If you're more the contemplative type, grab a fishing rod or simply find a quiet spot to watch boats cruise by. There's something deeply calming about sitting by the river, even if you're just there to daydream and enjoy the view.

Grab a Bite

Merwin's Wharf, run by Cleveland Metroparks, offers that rare combination of good food and even better scenery. The restaurant's outdoor seating area puts you right at the water's edge, where you can enjoy a varied menu and solid beer selection while watching kayakers paddle by.

During warmer months, the outdoor patio fills quickly with people soaking up sunshine and river views. In winter, they've been known to offer heated igloos, proving that riverside dining can be a year-round affair in Cleveland, regardless of what the weather decides to do.
