About the Location

A Riverside Retreat in the Heart of the City

Tucked along the Scioto River in downtown Columbus, North Bank Park spreads across 28.07 acres of urban greenspace. Since opening in 2005, it's become an integral piece of the Scioto Mile - that lovely network of parks and green corridors hugging the riverfront.

If you're heading into downtown Columbus, you might pass through this park, located near the city center. It sits just south of the bustling Arena District, offering a peaceful counterpoint to all that sports and entertainment energy. The views here? Pretty spectacular. The Columbus skyline rises dramatically across the water, and the old railway bridge frames many a great photo opportunity.

What Makes It Special

The park's glass pavilion stands as its architectural centerpiece, elegantly marking the terminus of Neil Avenue. The pavilion offers excellent panoramic views of the river and skyline. It's frequently used as a venue for weddings and events.

On hot summer days, the interactive spray fountain becomes the park's social hub, filled with laughing children cooling off in the water. Throughout the rest of the grounds, you can find well-maintained walking paths and plenty of open green spaces well-suited for stretching out with a book or tossing a frisbee.

A Touch of History

History buffs, keep your eyes peeled for the historical plaques scattered within the park. These markers tell the story of the Ohio penitentiary that once stood nearby - a fascinating glimpse into Columbus's past that many visitors miss.

There's something poetic about the park's creation story too. What was once merely a functional earthen berm and retaining wall (built to control flooding from the Scioto) has been transformed into this beautiful public space we enjoy today.

Connected to the Community

One of North Bank's greatest strengths is how it links to the broader city. The Scioto Trail runs right through it, connecting you to other parks and green spaces along the river. This makes it a favorite segment for cyclists, runners, and anyone enjoying a riverside stroll.

The park functions as a green space for downtown Columbus - hosting community events and providing recreation for residents and visitors.

Things to Do

While formal picnic tables are limited, the park offers plenty of large rock seating areas where you can enjoy a casual meal with river views. The open lawns invite impromptu picnics too.

Dog owners, your four-legged friends are welcome here (on leash, of course). You'll discover waste disposal bags across the grounds, making it easy to clean up after your pet as you explore the walking paths together.

Year-round, North Bank is a popular starting and finishing point for races, including the Nationwide Columbus Marathon and various charity runs. And if you're an early riser, the park offers a special treat in winter - a stunning vantage point to watch the sun come up over the Columbus skyline.
