About the Location
A Quarry Transformed
Situated in Columbus, Ohio, Quarry Trails Metro Park spans 182 acres of what was once the largest contiguous quarry in the United States. Opened in 2021 as the 20th addition to the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system, this park sits on the historic Marble Cliff Quarry site, which supplied limestone for many Central Ohio landmarks, including the Ohio Statehouse.
Walk through this park today and you'll feel the whispers of industrial history beneath your feet. Rugged terrain, limestone cliffs, and serene lakes create a landscape unlike any other local park. And if you're curious about the quarrying process, you're in luck - an active quarry operation still runs adjacent to the park, providing a fascinating backdrop to parts of the trail system.
Nature's Showstoppers
One of the most striking features of Quarry Trails is Millikin Falls, a 25-foot cascade tumbling into Roberts Millikin Ditch. You can admire this natural spectacle from the observation deck or descend limestone steps for a closer view. On hot summer days, the shallow pool at the base invites visitors to cool their feet in the refreshing water.
The park also includes several peaceful bodies of water, including Turtle Cove and Swan Lake. Bring your kayak or paddleboard for a relaxing glide across these non-motorized waterways. If fishing is more your style, cast a line for bass, bluegill, and catfish - catch-and-release fishing along the shoreline doesn't even require a license. Throughout the park, docks with comfortable seating areas offer perfect spots to pause and soak in the tranquil water views.
Trails for Every Explorer
Lacing through the park are about 6 miles of trails, mixing paved paths with natural surfaces that showcase the park's diverse terrain. Some routes offer stunning vistas of the lakes and fascinating glimpses of the old quarrying operations.
Mountain biking enthusiasts will find their thrill on the 0.75-mile single-track trail, featuring challenging descents and jumps designed for intermediate to advanced riders. Beginners and younger riders haven't been forgotten - a more accessible mountain biking trail awaits in the lower section of the park.
All told, the trail system includes five routes covering 7,000 linear feet of interesting terrain. Need a breather? Several swinging bench seats are placed at scenic outlooks across the park - good spots for catching your breath while taking in the views.
Something for Everyone
Dog owners will appreciate the spacious dog park situated on the bluffs overlooking the park. This large fenced-in green area gives four-legged friends plenty of room to run and play.
For families with kids, the modern playground offers various attractions, including a popular cable line feature that gives children the sensation of flying. Conveniently located near the multi-use development area, it's easy to access for a quick play session.
When winter blankets Columbus in snow, the park's massive sledding hill becomes the place to be. This natural attraction has quickly established itself as a favorite winter destination for thrill-seekers of all ages.
Craving more adventure? Try the via ferrata climbing experience with guided tours available for safe exploration. Clean restrooms, educational exhibits, and a children's area can be found at the small park office and Ranger's Nature Center.
A Park in Progress
Quarry Trails is still evolving, with ongoing construction to expand amenities and recreational opportunities. The park's thoughtful design aims to provide outdoor access to nearby urban residents - approximately 350,000 Franklin County residents live within just 5 miles.
What makes this park particularly unique is its integration with a mixed-use development featuring apartments, homes, and dining options, creating an interesting blend of urban convenience and natural escape.
Note that while some areas offer excellent accessibility with ramps and smooth pathways, other sections - particularly certain trails - are quite hilly and might challenge those with mobility limitations. The park is also relatively young, so the trees haven't yet grown to provide abundant shade. On sunny summer days, you'll want to bring sun protection and plenty of water as you explore this remarkable reclaimed landscape.
