About the Location
Natural Features
Found in North Toledo, Manhattan Marsh Preserve Metropark covers 73 acres of wetland. Opened in 2020, this natural oasis represents one of the last remaining pieces of the vast wetlands that once blanketed the region.
The urban world quickly fades away here. The moment you step into the preserve, you'll likely forget you're even in the city - something many visitors have mentioned. The marsh transforms dramatically with the seasons, ensuring no two visits ever feel quite the same.
Trails and Accessibility
The main feature is the Buckeye Basin Loop Trail, a 1.3-mile path with nearly 1,500 feet of concrete boardwalk that extends into the marsh. As you wander along, you'll encounter scenic overlooks perfectly positioned to showcase the wetland's ever-changing beauty.
The trail offers minimal elevation changes, making it welcoming for walking, running, or those with accessibility needs. That said, some visitors have mentioned that a few more benches along the boardwalks would be helpful for those who might need occasional rest stops.
Wildlife and Birdwatching
The preserve buzzes with life in every corner. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the marsh, with Metroparks Toledo and the Black Swamp Bird Observatory occasionally hosting expert-led birding expeditions.
On any given day, you might spot ducks gliding across the water, herons stalking with patient precision, or bullfrogs announcing their presence. Turtles, rabbits, and even the occasional deer, beaver, or otter make appearances. Throughout the seasons, the landscape comes alive with wildflowers, lily pads, and velvety green moss.
This urban wilderness helps protect biodiversity and shows how nature can thrive even in city settings.
Amenities
Practical comforts haven't been overlooked here. Near the parking area, you'll come across clean, year-round restrooms - two unisex facilities complete with drinking fountains to keep you hydrated on your adventures.
When hunger strikes, picnic tables, benches, and grilling areas await. The park also features a basketball court for those looking to mix some sport into their nature day, plus a bicycle repair station for cyclists in need.
The parking lot is well-maintained, although it can fill up during busy periods. Just note that the park operates with automatic gates that open at sunrise and close at 7 PM daily.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Four-legged friends are welcome companions here, making this preserve a favorite among dog owners. You'll need to keep your pup leashed at all times, and thankfully, pet waste bags are provided at the trailhead for easy cleanup.
The combination of open grassy areas and the loop trail creates an ideal setting for daily dog walks surrounded by nature.
Conservation Impact
What was once an inaccessible natural area has been thoughtfully transformed by Metroparks of Toledo into a public space that balances ecological preservation with recreational opportunities.
This project adds to Toledo's urban wetland conservation efforts, preserving a natural space within the city limits.
