About the Location

A Glimpse into History

Situated in Oklahoma City, Douglas Park carries a rich backstory that dates back to 1911. It's fascinating to think that this green space was once part of a school land section, essentially leased to private individuals to generate funding for public education. When the state Land Office transformed the area into an addition to Oklahoma City, Douglas Park was born.

The park owes its name to Grace Douglas, a woman ahead of her time who previously held the lease on this land. Grace wasn't just any landowner - she ran a farm on the school lease and worked as a freelance draftsman during an era when women were actively discouraged from pursuing careers. Talk about breaking barriers!

Layout and Natural Setting

Nestled between NW 45th and 47th streets, and stretching from N. Walker to Lee, Douglas Park covers about 8.5 acres of urban landscape.

If you visited decades ago, you might not recognize the place. The park's terrain has undergone quite a transformation over the years. What once featured sharp contours and a natural draw channeling water toward the Deep Fork River about half a mile north has been gently smoothed by landscaping efforts.

It's interesting to note that today's playground actually sits atop what used to be a small bluff. The north and south sides once formed a banked slope creating a natural drainage channel - a subtle reminder of how human design often reshapes nature.

What You'll Find There

Douglas Park offers several options for outdoor recreation. The baseball field is regularly buzzing with practices and games, adding a lively sports atmosphere to the neighborhood.

Need a peaceful retreat? The park offers plenty of open grassy areas well-suited for spreading out a picnic blanket or tossing a frisbee with friends. One of the most pleasant spots is the gazebo with bench seating shaded by mature trees - an ideal place to catch your breath or lose yourself in a good book.

Note that there are no public restrooms available in the park, which is worth keeping in mind if you're planning an extended visit.

Part of the Community Fabric

Douglas Park provides a green space within Oklahoma City's urban landscape, where residents can connect with nature without leaving the city.

The convenient location near shopping areas makes it easily accessible for a quick lunchtime stroll or an evening wind-down session. With its balanced mix of active sports areas and tranquil spaces, the park is part of the neighborhood's character and Oklahoma City's network of public spaces.

Many locals consider this park a neighborhood haven, appreciating its well-maintained grounds and the scenic views that change with the passing seasons.
