About the Location
A Bit of History
Back in the early 1920s, the Downtown Rotary Club generously donated this land to the city, naming it after one of the nation's oldest Rotary Club branches.
When it first opened, the park sat on what was then the rural edges of town, right by the streetcar yard and the OKC National Stockyards - quite different from the urban setting you'll find today!
What You'll Find Here
Spread across 44 acres of public green space, South Rotary Park offers plenty of options for recreation. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the baseball field, shoot some hoops at the basketball goals, or play a match on the tennis court.
If you're bringing kids along, they'll love the playground area with its impressive jungle gym that tends to be a hit with the younger crowd. There's also plenty of open space for running around, playing catch, or just enjoying a lazy afternoon outdoors.
Picnic Paradise
Looking for a spot to enjoy an outdoor meal? You're in luck! The park features a unique rooftop picnic area and three large picnic zones conveniently located near the parking lot - no need to lug your cooler across the entire park.
The northern section beyond the railroad tracks offers particularly beautiful landscaping, creating a peaceful backdrop for your family gatherings or casual lunch breaks.
A Touch of Local History
On the northwest corner of the park stands a stone marker - the last remnant of what was once a stone amphitheater. Though the structure itself is gone, you can still see the sloping terrain where performances once took place.
In its heyday, this amphitheater hosted plays, dance performances, and musical events that brought the community together. It's a quiet reminder of the park's cultural significance through the decades.
How the Park Has Changed
Like many public spaces, South Rotary Park has evolved over time. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the northwest corner was transformed into Will Rogers Courts, providing much-needed affordable housing for struggling families.
Through all these changes, the park has continued to serve Oklahoma City residents as a green space and recreational area.
Planning Your Visit
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 11PM. While it's a lovely place to spend time during the day, note that the surrounding area might not be the safest after dark.
If you're planning an evening visit, it's best to come with friends or family, especially as it gets later. Safety in numbers is always a good approach!
