About the Location

A New Green Heart in Northeast Eugene

Umso Park, which opened its gates in September 2023, brings 8.36 acres of thoughtfully designed recreational space to Northeast Eugene. Once known as Striker Field, the park now bears a name with deeper meaning - "Umso" comes from the Kalapuya language and translates to "it is good," honoring the indigenous heritage of the area.

Funded through System Development Charge Funds and the 2018 Parks and Recreation Bond, this park brings a new recreational space to Northeast Eugene.

Not Your Average Playground

Umso Park offers a different approach to play than standard playground equipment. Kids can test their climbing skills on wooden log stacks and square wooden posts with built-in hand and foot holds. The playground's swampy theme creates a mini adventure landscape with turf hills and artificial terrain that sparks imagination.

There's something for every age group here. Younger children have their own smaller structure, while older kids gravitate toward the larger equipment featuring an exhilarating zip-line. The swings section includes ADA-accessible options, ensuring more children can join in the fun.

One standout feature is the expansive sand pit complete with scooper machines and a summer water feature that transforms ordinary sand play into an engaging construction zone.

Cool Off When Temperatures Rise

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the splash pad becomes the park's refreshing centerpiece. On hot summer days, you'll come across families gravitating to this water play area, grateful for the chance to cool down while the kids burn off energy.

The designers thoughtfully integrated water elements throughout the play spaces, creating multiple opportunities for splashy fun that appeals to children of all ages.

Get Your Game On

Athletic types appreciate the basketball court for pickup games and solo practice sessions. The park's two pickleball courts have quickly become local favorites - though you might need to wait your turn as this increasingly popular sport draws crowds.

For something a bit different, try your hand at the pétanque court, an uncommon offering that adds European flair to this Eugene park.

Behind the playground, a generous open playing field provides space for impromptu soccer matches, frisbee tosses, or dog fetch sessions. When the breeze picks up, this same field becomes prime kite-flying territory.

Places to Gather and Unwind

Umso Park isn't just about active recreation - it offers plenty of spots to slow down and connect. Walking paths wind through the grounds, great for a leisurely stroll or morning jog, with benches positioned just where you need them.

The covered picnic shelter houses multiple tables, making it ideal for family get-togethers or small celebrations. Within the park, additional picnic tables invite casual lunches, with some featuring built-in chess tables for those who enjoy strategic thinking with their fresh air.

An informal amphitheater creates space for community performances and gatherings. It's not uncommon to spot local dance groups practicing here, adding unexpected entertainment to an everyday park visit.

The Practical Stuff

You can find clean restrooms that are well-maintained and accessible throughout the day, plus drinking fountains for both you and your four-legged friends.

Parking includes a small lot with about 12 spaces, with additional street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. While the playground includes some ADA-accessible elements, wheelchair access could use improvement in certain areas.

One of the park's greatest strengths is its spacious layout. Even during busy periods, there's room for families to spread out without feeling crowded - a thoughtful design choice that enhances everyone's experience.

Weather Wisdom

It's worth noting that shade is limited since the trees are still young and growing. The covered picnic area provides the main respite from the sun, which matters on hot days when the turf surfacing can get quite warm underfoot.

The park's open layout means it can get rather breezy, especially in the field areas near the playground. And heads up - after rain, some of the turf surfaces can become slippery.

Umso Park provides a versatile green space for recreation, play, and community gatherings. With its unique play structures and diverse facilities, it's become a popular spot for Eugene families since its opening.
