About the Location

Sports and Recreation

Tucked away in the Mt. Hood Neighborhood of Gresham, Oregon, Gradin Community Sports Park sprawls across 32.3 acres of public recreational space. This spot offers a refreshing mix of athletic facilities alongside natural beauty, with the rolling Gresham buttes creating a gorgeous backdrop that makes even a quick game of catch feel a bit more special.

The park has some soccer fields with well-maintained grass and clear goal posts - perfect whether you're practicing penalty kicks or joining a weekend pickup game. Sports lovers will also appreciate the baseball field, basketball court, and volleyball court that cater to various athletic interests when you're in the mood to switch things up.

Development History

Gradin has grown up gradually over the years. Its first phase wrapped up in 2009, bringing initial sports fields, walking paths, and parking areas to the community. Fast forward to now, and the park is in the midst of an exciting transformation set to significantly expand what it offers locals.

The latest development phase, scheduled to wrap up in summer 2025, will breathe new life into the space with additional sports fields, improved facilities, and a variety of fresh amenities. Look forward to an amenity plaza featuring pickleball courts (yes, finally!), more basketball courts, new restrooms, and a dedicated dog park where your four-legged friends can roam free. This expansion fulfills a plan that's been in development for over two decades.

Current Status

Heads up - from spring 2024 through summer 2025, the park will be closed to the general public while these improvements take place. Only existing permit holders will have limited access during this time. The construction includes preparing soil for fresh grass, trees, and various plants that will enhance the park's green spaces.

Funding

You might wonder how all this is being paid for. The expansion draws from a mix of funding sources, including grants from the American Rescue Plan Act, the Oregon State Lottery Bond, and local Parks System Development Charges - a true community effort from federal down to local levels.

Natural Features

What we find unique about Gradin is its integration with the Gresham Arboretum. A mile-long paved path circles the perimeter, showcasing a thoughtfully curated collection of trees that thrive in the local climate.

This walking trail offers a peaceful, shaded escape when you need a break from the action. You can push yourself on the playing fields, then cool down with a relaxing stroll through this living showcase of Pacific Northwest greenery.

Amenities

Beyond sports, the park includes a playground where kids can climb and slide, convenient picnic areas for post-game snacks, and essential restroom facilities. There are also shelters available when you need a bit of cover for gatherings or family celebrations.

The open grassy areas have become popular spots for flying drones, playing casual games of catch, or letting dogs explore (on-leash, of course). There's ample parking available, but keep in mind that shade is limited near the playing fields - something to remember on those sunny summer days.

Community Use

On weekends and evenings, Gradin fills with games and social activity. Dog walkers frequent the open spaces, making it a convenient spot to exercise while walking your pet.

The mix of recreation facilities and natural elements means you can either play sports on the courts or take a peaceful walk among the trees.
