About the Location
Park Overview
Positioned in Southeast Portland's Foster-Powell neighborhood, Essex Park spreads across 4.43 acres of green space that's been part of the community since 1940. As the neighborhood's largest park, it offers a little something for everyone without the overwhelming crowds you might find at Portland's more famous green spaces.
What's really nice about Essex is the balance it strikes - the well-kept grassy areas invite you to spread out a blanket, while mature trees create pockets of shade great for escaping those rare but appreciated sunny Portland days. It's a pleasant spot for neighbors looking for a peaceful place to unwind.
Playground and Water Features
If you've got kids in tow, you'll appreciate the two play structures that cater to different age groups - one for the little ones and another for older children. The playground sits in a mix of sun and shade, making it comfortable regardless of the weather, but you should note there aren't any swings here.
During summer months (June through September), the splash pad becomes the park's main attraction. It features multiple sprinklers that provide a good cool-down spot when temperatures rise.
Hungry after all that playing? Several picnic tables are scattered throughout, alongside a generous open field that's great for impromptu games of frisbee or just lounging with a good book.
Accessibility Features
Essex Park has several accessibility features. A recently improved pathway makes the restrooms accessible to everyone, and the playground itself was designed with all abilities in mind. The engineered mulch surface, entry ramp, and play equipment featuring sensory elements make this a place where kids of all abilities can have fun together.
Sports Facilities
For the more active crowd, you'll find two lighted tennis courts complete with a backboard for solo practice sessions. There's also a basketball court for pickup games and a well-maintained baseball field that hosts local teams and practices.
The baseball diamond seems to be a community favorite - you'll often spot families practicing batting with their kids or local teams running drills. It's clearly well-loved and maintained, functioning as a central gathering point for neighborhood sports enthusiasts.
During summer, the park joins Portland Parks & Recreation's Summer Free For All program, hosting free movies, concerts, and events that bring the community together. They also provide free snacks and lunch for kids - a thoughtful touch during school breaks.
Community Atmosphere
Essex Park has a neighborly atmosphere. On any given day, you'll see neighbors chatting while their leashed dogs explore the perimeter trail, families gathering for birthday celebrations, or friends meeting up for casual hangouts.
The atmosphere is laid-back and family-friendly - you might end up chatting with neighbors you haven't met before.
Location and Access
Situated in the heart of Foster-Powell, Essex Park is easy to reach via several nearby bus lines if you're taking public transit. If you're driving, you'll discover street parking readily available most days.
The park welcomes visitors from 5 AM to midnight every day of the week, giving you plenty of time to enjoy this neighborhood green no matter your schedule.
