About the Location
A Brief History
Nestled at the corner of 10th and Carpenter Streets in Philadelphia, Bardascino Park is a charming neighborhood green space with a story to tell. Established in 1978, this park stands on what was once Community Hospital, which closed its doors in 1968 before eventually being demolished.
The park bears the name of Giuseppe Bardascino, a local figure who founded and conducted the Italian Brass Band from 1912 to 1952. The park is located just a stone's throw from Philadelphia's historic Italian Market neighborhood, reflecting the area's cultural heritage.
From Neglect to Neighborhood Green
Like many urban spaces, Bardascino Park went through a rough patch. By the early 1990s, it had seen better days. That all changed in 1991 when neighbors banded together to form the Friends of Bardascino Park, determined to breathe new life into their local green space.
Their persistence paid off in 2003 with a major facelift that transformed the park. Out went the concrete surfaces, replaced by colorful pavers. New planting beds brought greenery back to the space, while fresh benches and tables created inviting spots to gather and relax.
Community at the Heart
The Friends of Bardascino Park continue to be central to maintaining this space. These dedicated locals don't just organize regular cleanups - they've created a calendar of community events that bring the neighborhood together. From free summer concerts to the popular KidFest and even World Cup watching parties, there's always something happening here.
Through their participation in the Parks Revitalization Project - a team effort with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy - they've helped secure the park's future. During the year, you'll find family-friendly activities taking place, including a delightful lantern craft event in December and a thought-provoking community photo exhibit come springtime.
Recreation and Relaxation
The park features a bocce court, maintained by the Friends group and the players in the Bardascino Park bocce league. If you're looking to try your hand at this traditional Italian game, the court is open to the public when league play isn't happening - typically outside weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons during summer months.
You can find plenty of places to sit around the park, with numerous benches and tables that make it excellent for everything from reading a book to enjoying a takeout lunch. On hot summer days, the mature trees provide welcome shade, creating a cool oasis in the urban landscape.
A Neighborhood Treasure
Bardascino Park is a vital gathering space in this bustling South Philadelphia neighborhood. Both dog-friendly and family-friendly, it's complemented by nearby amenities including a coffee shop, church, and community garden.
In the evening, thoughtful lighting transforms the park, creating a gentle glow that makes nighttime visits especially pleasant. Just remember that this is a carry in/carry out park - you'll need to take any trash with you when you leave, helping keep this special place clean and welcoming for everyone.
