Girard Park

Historic Roots

Girard Park is a 4-acre public green space located in the South Philadelphia neighborhood of Girard Estate. The park is bounded by West Shunk Street, West Porter Street, 21st Street, and 22nd Street.

Originally part of Stephen Girard's 75-acre farming estate purchased in 1797-1798, the park now serves as a central community gathering place. Girard, a wealthy merchant and philanthropist, developed the land into a farming enterprise that eventually grew to 583 acres. After his death in 1831, Girard left most of his estate, including his country mansion Gentilhommerie, to the city of Philadelphia.

Historic Mansion

The park contains Girard's historic mansion, which was modified in 1800 and again in 1825 to create his country retreat. While the mansion is not currently open to the public, it stands as a reminder of the area's history.

The surrounding park provides a tranquil green space in the urban environment of South Philadelphia.

Community Hub

Girard Park serves as the heart of the Girard Estate neighborhood, hosting community events such as movie nights and meet-and-greets. The park's layout and historic significance contribute to the unique character of the surrounding area, which was designated as a historic district in 1999.
