About the Location
A Slice of History in East Falls
Located in Philadelphia's East Falls neighborhood, McMichael Park has been offering 5.9 acres of green tranquility since 1929. Named after Morton McMichael - Philly's mayor from 1866 to 1869 and the first President of the Fairmount Park Commission - this space carries quite the historical weight. Interestingly, archaeologists have found evidence of an Indian village here, with numerous artifacts discovered across the park grounds. Talk about layers of history!
Nature's Urban Haven
If you're seeking a leafy escape from city life, you'll appreciate the open spaces framed by benches and shade trees that create a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. In 2023, the park leveled up by receiving ArbNet level 1 arboretum status - home to nearly 200 trees spanning over 50 varieties. It offers impressive botanical diversity.
Among the leafy residents stands an enormous White Ash pushing nearly 100 years old, which the City of Philadelphia has thoughtfully inoculated against the emerald ash borer. The park also protects two large Franklinia trees, a rare variety named after Benjamin Franklin that no longer exists in the wild but lives on in Philadelphia. The Weeping Copper Beech along the perimeter is particularly notable, with sweeping branches that create a natural hideaway.
The generous tree canopy makes this spot noticeably cooler during those sweltering Philly summers - a natural air conditioner when you need it most.
What You'll Find Here
Beyond the trees, McMichael Park honors history with a war memorial dedicated to World War II veterans. Kids enjoy the concrete turtle sculpture - a simple but enduring climbing attraction. Since 1992, the Friends of McMichael Park have partnered with the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation to maintain the park.
The modern playground offers a spider web-like climbing structure and various swings, including a particularly popular hammock swing. Natural play elements encourage imaginative play and physical activity, however note that you won't find baby swings or slides here.
Just a heads up: while the park is well-maintained, there aren't any public restrooms or water fountains available. You'll typically find street parking around the park's perimeter if you're driving over.
Things to Do
The expansive grassy areas are good for spreading out a picnic blanket, tossing a frisbee, or enjoying impromptu sports. Whether you're looking for a quiet corner to read or space for a group gathering, the layout accommodates both.
During summer months, you can join yoga and Pilates classes led by local instructors - a lovely way to exercise in natural surroundings. The park welcomes dogs too, however they need to stay on leash.
Many people come simply to unwind, meditate, or reconnect with nature without leaving city limits - sometimes that's exactly what you need.
Community Hub
Throughout the year, McMichael Park hosts various community gatherings - from movie nights to children's theater performances and seasonal clean-ups.
Parks on Tap, Philly's wandering beer garden, occasionally sets up here during summer. The park also regularly hosts family gatherings, church events, and neighborhood celebrations.
