Historic Origins
Wissinoming Park is a public green space located in the Wissinoming neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park covers approximately 41 acres and has been a part of the community since 1913 when the city purchased the land from Thomas and Indiana Tansey.
Originally part of the estate of Robert Cornelius, a chemist and early photographer, the park retains some of the natural beauty from its past. Cornelius had planted over 4,000 trees on his property, many of which were rare specimens.
Natural Features
While not all of the original plantings survive, the park still boasts a diverse array of mature trees that provide shade and habitat for local wildlife.
The layout of the park includes both active recreational areas and more passive, natural spaces for relaxation and enjoyment of the outdoors.
Amenities and Community Role
The park features open green spaces, walking paths, and recreational facilities that serve the surrounding community. It has undergone various improvements and renovations over the years to maintain its amenities and natural features.
Wissinoming Park plays an important role in the neighborhood, offering residents a place for outdoor activities, community gatherings, and connection with nature within an urban setting. Its long history and continued presence make it a significant landmark in the Wissinoming area of Philadelphia.
