Natural Setting
The 7.37-acre public green space is located on Fort Johnson Road on James Island, Charleston, South Carolina. The park was acquired by the Town of James Island in 2015 using Charleston County Greenbelt Funds.
Situated on a tributary of Parrot Point Creek and surrounded by residential neighborhoods and other protected lands, the site offers visitors serene natural settings with beautiful marsh and creek views. Majestic live oak trees provide ample shade, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors.
Historical Significance
The property was once part of a larger tract owned by Simeon Pinckney, a former slave who purchased the land in 1874.
It serves as both a recreational space and a place of historical interest, offering visitors a chance to connect with nature and learn about the area's past.
Amenities and Development
The park has been developed in phases to provide recreational opportunities for the community. The first phase of construction, completed in 2017, included the installation of a playground and walking trails.
In 2020, the second phase added a screened-in picnic shelter with attached restrooms, enhancing the park's amenities for visitors.
The park's design incorporates elements that respect its natural surroundings and historical significance.
