About the Location
A Glimpse into History
Located in Charleston's Wagener Terrace neighborhood, Corrine Jones Park (formerly Hester Park) has quite the backstory. This green space sits on what was once part of the Buist Tract - land that housed workers during World War II.
When the war ended, the property eventually found its way into the hands of the City of Charleston in December 2011. That same year, the park got a much-needed facelift, with the local community pitching in an impressive $20,000 of the $95,000 renovation costs. A significant community contribution.
Where the Community Comes Together
Corrine Jones Park is popular with Wagener Terrace residents, welcoming people of all ages with its mix of active and laid-back recreational options.
The park is generally clean and well-maintained. And yes, there's plenty of parking available, so you won't need to circle the block endlessly before enjoying what this neighborhood haven has to offer.
Get Your Game On
Feel like breaking a sweat? The park has basketball courts and tennis courts that are well-maintained. The tennis courts are also lined for pickleball - which has developed a regular group of players here.
Kids have their own domain at the playground, while the open grassy areas provide perfect spots for throwing a frisbee, having a picnic, or just lounging with a good book. Soccer fans can take advantage of the soccer field for everything from organized games to casual kickarounds.
Growing Community Bonds
Perhaps the most unique feature of Corrine Jones Park is its thriving community garden. Local residents tend to their private garden beds with care, creating a patchwork of colors and textures that changes with the seasons. The garden's clever shade structure does double duty by capturing rainwater for irrigation - sustainability in action!
More than just a pretty space, this garden brings neighbors together through a shared love of growing things. The garden is supported by the Charleston Parks Conservancy and provides a peaceful green space where neighbors can connect.
