About the Location
Breathtaking Harbor Vistas
Located on James Island, this small park provides excellent panoramic views of Charleston Harbor. Locals still affectionately call it "Sunrise Park" - and for good reason. The sunrises over the water here are worth setting your alarm for. The park also offers impressive sunset views with Charleston's skyline and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in the background.
From this peaceful perch, you can take in several Charleston landmarks: the Battery, Patriots Point, the elegant arch of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, and historic Fort Sumter in the distance. We've found it's a fantastic spot to practice your photography skills or just sit quietly and soak in Charleston's natural beauty. If you're lucky (and patient), you might even spot dolphins gliding through the harbor waters - always a magical moment.
Park History
The park received its official name in 2007, honoring Melton Peter Demetre who donated this beautiful piece of land to the City of Charleston for everyone to enjoy. His donation has ensured public access to these waterfront views.
Things to Do
The park's 190-foot fishing pier extends right into the harbor, complete with a 20-by-20-foot pier head and a 40-foot floating dock. You'll often find fishing enthusiasts casting lines here, but it's just as nice for leaning against the railing and gazing out at the water.
There are two sandy waterfront beaches where you can dip your toes in the sand or hunt for fossil shark teeth - a surprisingly common find in this area. Swimming isn't recommended due to strong currents, though some people wade in during high tide. Watch out for sharp oyster shells in the sand - water shoes are recommended.
Though not large, the park offers scenic beauty and a quieter alternative to Charleston's more tourist-heavy spots.
Amenities
You'll find a covered picnic shelter with tables - ideal for enjoying a sandwich while watching boats glide by on the harbor. There's also plenty of open grassy space where you can spread out a blanket for an impromptu picnic.
Public restrooms are available in the parking lot area. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 8PM, with an automatic gate that closes promptly at closing time.
Bring Your Four-Legged Friends
Demetre Park is a popular spot for dog owners, and your leashed pups are welcome throughout. The park is well-equipped for furry visitors with doggie waste bag stations and water fountains designed specifically for dogs. The beaches and open spaces give your leashed companions plenty of room to sniff and explore.
When to Visit
For a truly peaceful experience, try visiting on weekday mornings when you might have the whole place to yourself. Hunting for shark teeth? Mid-tide offers your best chances. Early mornings are magical for those famous sunrises, while evenings deliver gorgeous sunsets over the Charleston skyline.
During summer, don't forget your bug spray - the mosquitoes can be quite enthusiastic, especially as evening approaches. The park also becomes a popular viewing spot for holiday fireworks, particularly on the Fourth of July, but keep in mind parking is limited.
