About the Location
Scenic Features
At the heart of Smythe Park lies an 11-acre lake that creates a peaceful backdrop for your visit. The lake includes a kayak dock where you can paddle out and enjoy the water at your own pace. Keep your eyes peeled - the lake is home to various fish species and occasionally an alligator might make an appearance (from a safe distance, of course).
Find your perfect spot around the park to catch glimpses of the Wando River and the majestic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in the distance. If you're into nature photography or birdwatching, you'll come across plenty of opportunities to indulge your hobby here.
Recreational Offerings
Spanning 22 acres, Smythe Park is Daniel Island's largest green space, where both locals and visitors come for some fresh air.
The lake is encircled by well-maintained pedestrian trails and sidewalks that make for pleasant strolls. Don't miss the history trail, which offers interesting tidbits about the area's past as you walk. These paths are great for casual walks, morning jogs, or bike rides.
Packing a lunch? The park features several picnic areas with picnic tables dotted around the lake. There are even grill stations available if you're in the mood for some outdoor cooking - just bring your charcoal and favorite foods!
Kids will light up at the sight of the pirate-themed playground located on the southeast edge of the park. It's suitable for children of all ages and adds a touch of adventure to family outings.
Amenities and Features
You'll discover benches thoughtfully placed around the park, well-suited for taking a moment to soak in the views or catch your breath. During those hot Charleston days, the park's shaded areas offer welcome relief from the sun.
Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at the lake on a catch and release basis - a relaxing way to spend a few hours regardless of your skill level.
Note that there are no public restrooms available in the park, so plan accordingly before your visit.
Community Connection
The park bears the name of Henry Smythe, who served as the Charleston attorney for the Guggenheim family - a little piece of local history.
Smythe Park functions as a community gathering space. The Daniel Island Property Owners' Association and residents organize events here, from casual get-togethers to larger celebrations like Fourth of July festivities.
The expansive green spaces make it great for all sorts of outdoor activities and social gatherings. Dog owners will appreciate that the park is dog-friendly (leashes required), with a reputation for responsible pet owners and a welcoming atmosphere for both two-legged and four-legged visitors.
