About Court Square in Memphis
Court Square Park is a historic 2-acre urban plaza located in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. It is the only one of Memphis' four original parks laid out by city planners in 1819 that remains in its original form. The park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
At the center of Court Square stands the Hebe Fountain, installed in 1876. The cast iron fountain is 20 feet high and 35 feet in diameter, depicting Hebe, the cupbearer to the Greek gods in mythology. The fountain underwent a full renovation in 1980.
The park features shade trees, walking paths, and benches, providing a quiet oasis amid the busy downtown area. It is surrounded by office buildings and streets, offering workers and visitors a peaceful place to relax. The square is situated between Main and Second Streets at Court Avenue.
Court Square has played a role in Memphis history and culture over the years. It was the site of the city's first schoolhouse, though no courthouse was ever built there despite the original intention. The park has been featured in films and continues to be a popular gathering spot in downtown Memphis.
