About Centennial Park
A Nashville Time Capsule
Centennial Park covers 132 acres just two miles west of downtown Nashville, sitting across from Vanderbilt University like a green space in the urban landscape. Established in 1903, this park has deep roots in Tennessee history - it was originally the site of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition that celebrated the state hitting its 100-year milestone.

The Parthenon: Athens in Tennessee
You can't miss the park's crown jewel: the Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the ancient Greek temple. The choice to model it after the Athenian original wasn't incidental - it was a deliberate nod to Nashville's long-standing nickname, 'The Athens of the South,' a title the city had carried for generations based on its concentration of universities and cultural institutions. What started as a temporary exhibition structure for the 1897 Exposition became so cherished that Nashvillians rebuilt it in permanent materials between 1920 and 1931.

Step inside and you'll discover yourself in an art museum showcasing both permanent collections and rotating exhibits. The showstopper is undoubtedly the 42-foot statue of Athena towering in the main hall - sculpted by Nashville artist Alan LeQuire and installed in 1990, it's a faithful recreation of the one that once stood in the original Greek temple. The statue carries a layer of meaning that's easy to miss: it was formally dedicated to the women's suffrage movement, giving the ancient goddess a distinctly American civic significance. There's a modest $10 admission fee, and standing before Athena's golden presence is quite an impressive sight.
Out front, a statue of John W. Thomas creates a striking visual foreground to the temple's columns - particularly worth noticing in autumn when the surrounding landscape adds to the scene.

Monuments and Memorials
Also the work of Alan LeQuire, the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument was unveiled on August 26, 2016 - Women's Equality Day. The monument depicts five Tennessee women who played significant roles in the suffrage movement: Carrie Chapman Catt, Anne Dallas Dudley, Abby Crawford Milton, Juno Frankie Pierce, and Sue Shelton White. It's a meaningful piece of public history that rewards a closer look.

Nature's Retreat
At the heart of the park lies Lake Watauga, an artificial lake dating back to the 1897 Exposition. On sunny days, you'll spot paddle boaters gliding across its surface, while others simply enjoy the shoreline path.

The lake acts as a mini-ecosystem, home to ducks, geese, various birds, and turtles sunning themselves on logs. Spring brings new life with ducklings, goslings, and tiny turtles making their debut along the water's edge.
A more recent addition is the uncovered and restored Cockrill Spring, which now provides sustainable water for the park's needs - a thoughtful blend of history and environmental consciousness.

Get Moving or Just Relax
When locals need to stretch their legs, many head to the park's one-mile walking trail that loops around the lake. Within the grounds, you'll discover meticulously maintained sunken gardens and seasonal flower beds that add splashes of color to the landscape.
The park's bandshell hosts music and performances throughout the year, including the popular Musicians Corner series featuring local talent.
Recent renovations have enhanced the Great Lawn, a sprawling 19-acre open space where you'll come across everything from casual frisbee games to picnicking families to major community events.
Family Zone
Kids have plenty of room to burn energy at the multiple playgrounds featuring modern equipment. The play areas offer a good balance of fun and safety.
Around the park, picnic tables invite family gatherings, while open grassy spaces provide a fantastic spot to spread a blanket for an impromptu outdoor meal.
And yes, your four-legged family members are welcome too - the park is dog-friendly, however they'll need to stay leashed as they explore alongside you.

Community Cornerstone
Centennial Park also hosts year-round events for the community. From the Tennessee Craft Fair to Shakespeare in the Park performances, there's always something happening.
Swifties take note: a Taylor Swift bench has become something of a pilgrimage spot. Swift references Centennial Park in the opening line of her song 'Invisible String,' a nod to her early years living in Nashville, and when she returned to the city for The Eras Tour in 2023, the bench was installed as a marker of that connection.
With free parking and an accessible location, Centennial Park offers options for both active outings and quiet moments away from the city.
