About the Location

A Piece of Abilene's Soul

Found in downtown Abilene's landscape, Everman Park carries a story that dates back to 1880 when it hosted the original town lot sales that put Abilene on the map. What was once a makeshift racetrack for cowboys and their horses is now a pleasant green space in the city.

The park got its official name in 1914, honoring John Everman, an officer of the Texas and Pacific Railway who helped shape the region. After renovations in the 1990s, this one-acre green space between Pine and Cypress Streets along North First Street became a notable downtown spot.

Where Dr. Seuss Characters Come to Life

Walk through Everman Park and you'll discover yourself in unexpected company - bronze sculptures of cherished Dr. Seuss characters installed in 2012 and 2013. The Cat in the Hat might tip his iconic red and white striped hat at you, while Horton the Elephant stands guard, and the environmentally conscious Lorax reminds us to speak for the trees.

Beyond the Seuss crew, you'll discover other literary-inspired pieces like "Childhood's Great Adventure" and "The Man in the Moon," both celebrating children's author William Joyce. These whimsical figures bridge generations - bringing childhood memories flooding back for adults while introducing these classic characters to a new crop of young readers.

A Downtown Escape

The centerpiece of the park is its large fountain, whose gentle streams create a soothing soundtrack that somehow manages to drown out the nearby urban hustle. Walking paths wind through well-kept green spaces, with strategically placed benches inviting you to sit and stay awhile.

Thankfully, mature trees cast generous shade across the grounds - a blessing during those scorching Texas summers. Despite being between railroad tracks and a busy street, the park offers a surprisingly quiet atmosphere. And yes, your four-legged friends are welcome too, provided they stay leashed.

Picture Perfect

If you enjoy photography, you'll find plenty of interesting subjects in Everman Park. The mix of sculpted landscapes, artistic installations, and architectural elements creates endless possibilities for family portraits and casual snapshots alike.

Don't miss the tunnel area with its distinctive red lighting for some truly unique photo ops. If you happen to visit during the holiday season, the Christmas decorations and twinkling lights add an extra layer of magic to your pictures.

Where Abilene Comes Together

The park hosts various events throughout the year, from cultural celebrations like the Cinco de Mayo festival to casual meet-ups.

Its downtown location makes it a great spot to catch your breath after exploring local shops or visiting The Grace Museum just across the street.

Far From Just a Pretty Space

In 2015, Everman Park helped Abilene earn its title as the "Storybook Capital of Texas" from the state legislature. The Dr. Seuss collection here represents the second-largest grouping of storybook statues in the city - a point of civic pride.

The park continues to be central to the city's cultural identity, playing a key role in the annual Children's Art & Literacy Festival. Despite its modest size, Everman Park is an important part of downtown Abilene with connections to the city's history and cultural identity.
