Location and Setting

Tucked into the northwest corner of Austin, Texas, Rattan Creek Park sprawls across 13 acres where Tamayo Drive meets Elkhorn Mountain Trail. The park's namesake, Rattan Creek, meanders through the grounds, adding a touch of natural charm to the landscape. It's just a shallow stream - only a few inches deep - but it's fantastic for dogs who love to splash around, especially after a good Texas rain.

Trails and Natural Areas

If you're looking to stretch your legs, you're in luck. The park offers over a mile of walking and hiking paths that wind through natural areas. These are mostly dirt trails with some concrete sections thrown in, and you'll only encounter one road crossing along the entire route.

The paths follow the stream, passing through pretty tree-lined sections and open meadows - a little touch of nature in the city. Local runners particularly love these trails for training, with sunrise and sunset offering especially beautiful views. The linear layout means you can walk the entire trail out and back in under an hour - excellent for a quick nature fix.

Sports and Recreation Facilities

Rattan Creek offers plenty of athletic facilities. The park houses several baseball and soccer fields, volleyball courts (including sand volleyball options), basketball courts, and tennis courts that sometimes double as pickleball courts.

Swimming Pool

The park features a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, which is heated to 80-82 degrees during winter months. You can purchase either summer season or annual memberships if you plan to visit regularly.

The 280,000-gallon pool includes two lap lanes and a 12-foot-deep diving well complete with two diving boards and a slide. For the little ones, there's a separate wading pool with its own slide - a hit with infants and toddlers thanks to its shallow depth that's just right for tiny swimmers.

Family-Friendly Amenities

Kids have plenty of space to burn energy at the multiple playgrounds designed for different age groups. You'll discover various play equipment within the park, creating safe spots for children to explore and have fun. Swings are scattered around the grounds too, always a classic favorite.

The park's open green spaces are excellent for throwing a frisbee, having a picnic, or just lounging on a blanket. Several covered pavilions come equipped with picnic tables and BBQ grills - ideal for family gatherings or meetups with friends. There's even a stage area for community performances.
