About the Location
Recreational Facilities
Found in Brownsville, Texas, Oliveira Park (formally known as Joe & Tony Oliveira Park) spans 24 acres of green space popular with active folks and families.
The park is dotted with outdoor playing fields where you can kick around a soccer ball or catch a baseball game. There are also basketball and tennis courts if those are more your speed. The soccer fields are spacious enough for proper matches, however keep in mind there aren't any bleachers if you're planning to watch from the sidelines.
Skaters will appreciate the dedicated skate park where you can practice tricks without getting shooed away. Inside the gymnasium building, you'll come across volleyball courts waiting for your next match.
Amenities
Kids have their own space to burn energy at the children's playgrounds. Currently, one playground is ready for action while another is temporarily fenced off for a makeover - soon to be even better!
When you need a breather, there are plenty of grassy spots and picnic tables scattered throughout. The recreation building houses a multi-purpose gymnasium that expands your options when the weather doesn't cooperate.
For those who prefer to keep moving, a paved walking and biking trail runs alongside the park, great for a longer stroll or ride.
Swimming and Aquatics
When the Texas heat cranks up, the park's swimming pool becomes a welcome oasis. It's a great spot to cool off and splash around with family or friends during the warmer months.
Wildlife Viewing
Here's what makes Oliveira Park special - it's a great spot for birdwatchers, particularly those hoping to spot parrots. The park hosts an impressive population of red-crowned Amazon parrots that call these trees home.
If you visit between 5 and 6 PM, you're in for a treat as hundreds (sometimes even thousands!) of these colorful birds return to roost for the evening. The chattering chorus and flashes of green against the sunset create quite a sight. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even catch sight of the occasional yellow-headed parrot mixed in with the flock.
Visitor Information
The park comes equipped with all the basics - restrooms and ample parking, including a large lot behind the baseball field. It's situated in West Brownsville, making it easy to find and access.
Many locals bring their dogs for walks here, although you'll need to keep your four-legged friend on a leash as there isn't a dedicated off-leash area. Regardless of whether you're looking to play sports, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the unexpected parrot spectacle, Oliveira Park offers a pleasant green retreat from city life.
