About Dr. David E. Schob Nature Preserve in College Station
The Schob Nature Preserve is a 7.44-acre property located in College Station, Texas. This urban green space serves multiple purposes as a neighborhood park, research site, and outdoor classroom for Texas A&M University students. The preserve was bequeathed to Texas A&M University in 2009 by David E. Schob, a former history professor at the institution.
The property features a mix of environments, including a wooded area and a Blackland Prairie remnant, providing habitat for various flora and fauna. Brick walking paths wind through the preserve, allowing visitors to explore the natural surroundings. A small student residence is also present on the grounds, occupied by a student who helps oversee the preserve.
Texas A&M University manages the Schob Nature Preserve with a focus on education, research, and conservation. The Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism Sciences share responsibility for the parkland portion. The preserve offers opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning experiences related to environmental studies, ecology, and land management.
The Schob Scholars Program supports research and initiatives at the preserve. This program provides funding for collaborative work between colleagues at Texas A&M University, Texas A&M Agrilife Research, and Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, furthering the educational and scientific value of the site.
