About the Location
A Peaceful Urban Retreat
Positioned in Highland Park, Dallas, Lakeside Park spans 14 acres between Beverly Drive and Armstrong Parkway. The park follows the curves of Turtle Creek, offering a quiet escape from city life. At its heart lies a serene lake that transforms the landscape into something almost painting-like on still mornings.
What You'll Find Here
Winding walking paths guide you through meticulously maintained grounds - seriously, the landscaping here is impressive. The bridge over the Turtle Creek Dam is both a practical crossing and an ideal spot to pause and take in the views. We've found it's especially beautiful during golden hour.
The park features whimsical Teddy Bear statues created by sculptor Jerry Williams. These charming figures stand guard on the western shore of the lake, adding a touch of playfulness to the scenery. They've become something of local celebrities and make for fantastic photo opportunities. You'll also find the more solemn Read Memorial here, connecting visitors to the area's history.
If fishing is your thing, the lake offers some decent opportunities - local anglers occasionally reel in bullhead catfish. And yes, there are ducks gliding across the water, completing that perfect park atmosphere.
Relaxation Your Way
Lakeside Park has good spots for a picnic, though you'll need to bring your own blanket as there aren't designated tables. Comfortable benches are scattered throughout, excellent for resting or simply watching the world go by.
One of the park's best qualities is that it rarely feels crowded. The mature trees create generous pockets of shade, making even summer visits enjoyable.
Recent Updates
The park received a thoughtful facelift in 2024, with improvements to landscaping, better drainage systems, and enhanced lighting throughout the grounds.
Practical upgrades included replacing worn sidewalks, refreshing bench areas, and adding a new ADA accessibility ramp east of the Exall pedestrian bridge - making the park more welcoming for everyone.
The Experience
Both locals and visitors gravitate to Lakeside Park for its blend of natural beauty and thoughtful design. It's dog-friendly, so you'll often see residents strolling with their four-legged companions.
The park is popular with photographers, with its scenic backdrops used for maternity photoshoots, graduation pictures and quinceañera celebrations. The glimpses of beautiful mansions visible from certain vantage points only add to its picturesque charm.
