About the Location
Location and Overview
Found in eastern El Paso on Rufus Brijalba Drive, Dick Shinaut Park is a breath of fresh air for outdoor enthusiasts. This public green space welcomes visitors 24 hours daily, offering a generous spread of genuine grass and mature trees that cast much-needed shade when Texas temperatures climb. Whether you're looking for a morning jog spot or an evening hangout, the park is available around the clock.
Recent Makeover
The park recently received a significant upgrade, with the City of El Paso celebrating the completion of renovations. Part of a citywide effort to boost quality of life through better recreational spaces, the crown jewel of these improvements is undoubtedly the revamped skate park.
Completed in 2023, the skating area now boasts a fresh 6-inch concrete skate plaza that's quickly becoming a favorite among local boarders. With its mix of ramps, grinding rails, ledges, and concrete steps, there's something for everyone from beginners to seasoned pros. The $551,000 project included a smooth concrete finish that skaters seem to appreciate. And since the lights stay on until 10 PM, you can keep skating long after sunset.
Beyond Skating
While the skate park might steal the spotlight, Dick Shinaut has plenty more to offer. You'll discover a well-maintained basketball court, a spacious soccer field, and a thoughtfully designed playground with separate areas for different age groups. If you're planning a casual get-together, the park's picnic tables scattered throughout provide perfect spots to relax and refuel.
A walking path loops around the entire park, ideal for those morning strolls or evening cool-downs. These trails circle the skate park and other amenities, giving walkers and dog owners a pleasant route for daily exercise without getting in the way of other activities.
Community Hub
Beyond its facilities, Dick Shinaut serves the neighborhood as a place where east El Paso residents gather and stay active. The park occasionally transforms into an outdoor cinema with community movie screenings under the stars. If you're looking to polish your skateboarding skills, word has it that a skateboarding coach stops by on Mondays around 5-6 PM to offer tips.
The expansive, level grounds provide ample space for impromptu sports games and team practices. The park's diverse offerings cater to various interests and ages, making it popular with locals.
Good to Know
The park offers portable toilets rather than permanent restrooms, which is worth keeping in mind for longer visits. There's parking available, but be careful not to leave your vehicle in the bike lane along the street - you might end up with a ticket.
You'll generally find the park at its cleanest and quietest during weekday mornings. As expected, weekends and evenings draw bigger crowds, especially around the skate park where enthusiasts gather to practice their tricks and socialize.
