About the Location
A Green Escape in the City
Set in the Lower Valley neighborhood, Thomas Manor Park stretches across 12.5 acres of green space, offering a peaceful retreat from city life. This park offers El Paso residents a place to relax, exercise, and enjoy nature without leaving town.
Fresh Face After 2020 Makeover
In 2020, the park got a serious upgrade, with its retention pond being the star of the renovation show. El Paso Water poured $6.8 million into expanding the pond's capacity to a whopping 14.4 million gallons - that's like fitting 21 Olympic swimming pools into the park!
Beyond just looking pretty, this enhancement plays a crucial role in managing stormwater and keeping nearby neighborhoods dry during heavy rains. Beyond recreation, the park now also functions as a wildlife preserve, adding ecological value to the area.
What You Can Do Here
The park features winding paths that meander through scenic landscapes, fantastic for your morning jog or an evening stroll. The flat exercise fields remain in good condition year-round for various fitness activities.
Looking for some play? There's a basketball court where you can shoot some hoops, plus a playground for the kids - though the equipment has been the same for quite some time. Located near the Cesar E. Chavez Border Highway (Texas 375 Loop), the park is accessible from most parts of El Paso.
Nature's Little Surprises
The retention pond has created a mini-ecosystem that draws in local wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for Burrowing Owls in their dedicated area within the park - it's a special treat for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
As you explore, you might catch the distant sound of trains passing by or, interestingly enough, goats bleating from nearby properties. These quirky auditory additions just add to the park's unique character and remind you of its connection to the surrounding landscape.
For Everyone to Enjoy
With its family-friendly atmosphere and dog-friendly policy, Thomas Manor Park is a place where locals gather and various events take place. The well-lit exercise trail makes it easy to stay active even as the sun sets.
There are picnic areas with tables dotted throughout the grounds, but they're limited in number, so you might want to arrive early to snag one. Despite this, the park's generous layout means you'll rarely feel crowded, even on busier days.
