About the Location
Location and History
Found in southwest Fort Worth, Oakmont Park spans 127.2 acres of diverse landscape. Established in 1980 when Oakmont Joint Ventures generously donated the land for public use, this green oasis sits not far from Benbrook Lake and just south of the Clear Fork of the Trinity River.
The park sits at the meeting point of the East Cross Timbers and the Fort Worth Prairie Region. With mature trees, open grassy areas, and scenic river views, you can enjoy a touch of nature that feels removed from city life.
Trails and Recreation
The park offers several options for physical activity. The park features well-maintained walking and biking trails that wind through wooded areas and cross two picturesque bridges. These paths connect to the broader Trinity Trails system, allowing for longer routes if desired.
The paved trails are fantastic for walkers, runners, and cyclists alike, but fair warning: some sections can get a bit muddy after heavy rainfall. For those willing to explore a bit further, there's a small waterfall hidden along the trail - a lovely reward for the extra steps. Even in the Texas heat, the shaded paths offer comfortable conditions for outdoor activities.
Family-Friendly Amenities
Got kids? They'll love the modern playground area near the Bellaire Drive entrance. After suffering some damage in the past, the playground has been fully restored and improved with swings, slides, and climbing structures suitable for various age groups. Multiple parking lots around the park make it easy to access different areas, so you won't have to trek far with little ones in tow.
Picnic Areas and Facilities
Oakmont Park is excellent for outdoor meals with several picnic areas featuring tables - some even sheltered under a covered gazebo. The sprawling grassy areas provide plenty of space for throwing a frisbee, playing casual sports, or simply spreading out a blanket to relax.
As for restrooms, you'll discover porta-potties at the park entrances and the Art Cowsen Trailhead. Just note that these facilities are somewhat limited throughout the expansive park, so plan accordingly.
Wildlife and Conservation
Beyond recreation, Oakmont Park plays an important role in the local ecosystem. Its position along the Trinity River corridor creates a valuable habitat for diverse plant and animal species. Keep your eyes peeled during your visit - you might spot deer grazing in the distance, cardinals flitting between trees, or other wildlife in the park's more natural areas. The mix of open spaces and forested sections creates a variety of habitats all within the park boundaries.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Four-legged friends are more than welcome at Oakmont Park. Dogs on leashes can accompany you across the grounds, making this a popular spot for pet owners looking to get some exercise with their companions. It's worth noting that most dog owners here are good about cleaning up after their pets, helping to keep the park clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Safety and Visitor Tips
While Oakmont is generally a safe, family-friendly destination, it's wise to be cautious with valuables in your car. There have been occasional reports of break-ins in the parking areas, so either secure your belongings or keep them out of sight.
You should also be aware that many paths are shared between cyclists and pedestrians. A little mutual awareness and courtesy go a long way toward everyone having a good time.
Hours of Operation
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 11PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy its natural beauty and amenities all year long.
