About the Location
Park Overview
Nestled along N. Houston Rosslyn Road in Houston, Texas, Alabonson Park spans a generous 50.21 acres of multi-use space. What makes this park unique is its practical origin - it was developed as part of a flood mitigation project along White Oak Bayou, combining recreational space with flood control infrastructure. For peace of mind, the entire park is gated with a main entrance and a separate north side entrance.
Development and Funding
This green space didn't appear overnight. It took a community effort and some significant funding to bring Alabonson Park to life. Harris County Precinct 4 Park Bond funds contributed $2 million, while Texas Parks & Wildlife kicked in with a $1 million grant. The City of Houston played its part too, donating the land for the project.
In an interesting international connection, the State of Qatar contributed $1.3 million through its Qatar Harvey Fund to build soccer fields that double as water collection basins - a smart design feature that helps protect the area from future flooding.
Recreational Amenities
No matter if you're a sports enthusiast or just looking for some outdoor relaxation, Alabonson Park has something for everyone. Sports facilities include fields for softball, baseball, soccer, and football. While some soccer fields can be reserved, many remain open for impromptu games or practice.
If you prefer a more casual outdoor experience, the park's paved walking paths wind around the grounds, great for a morning jog or an evening stroll. Young trees line these trails - they're not huge shade-providers yet, but give them time!
Families with kids will appreciate the playground with its climbing structures and swings. There are also pleasant picnic areas with tables in shaded sections, and a butterfly garden that adds a touch of natural beauty to the space.
Facilities
The park's pavilion offers more than picnic tables - it includes a community meeting room where neighborhood organizations can gather.
Practical amenities haven't been overlooked either. You can find clean, well-maintained restrooms with nearby water fountains around the park. Dog owners can make use of the dog waste stations - yes, your leashed furry friends are welcome here!
There's plenty of parking available, and during operating hours, you'll see Precinct 1 Parks Department staff on-site to help with any needs. Regular constable patrols add an extra layer of security to the park.
Wildlife and Environment
Even though it's surrounded by urban development, Alabonson Park has created space for nature. Families of squirrels have made their homes here, adding life to the landscape. The tree coverage isn't extensive yet, but ongoing planting efforts mean more shady spots will develop as the years pass.
Community Impact
For the surrounding neighborhoods, Alabonson Park provides a safe, clean place for recreation that was previously missing from the area. It's a place where families gather, with children using the playground and sports fields while adults walk the trails. Thoughtfully placed benches along the paths offer spots to rest or simply watch the world go by.
One notable aspect of this park is how it demonstrates practical urban planning - converting necessary flood control measures into a usable community space. It combines flood protection, recreation, and community space all in one.
