About the Location
A Hidden Third Ward Treasure
Found in Houston's historic Third Ward, Malone Park (also known as Zurrie Malone Park) might be small, but it packs a punch as a cherished green space for locals. This pocket park offers a quiet retreat from city life, providing a little breathing room in one of Houston's most culturally significant neighborhoods.
Fresh Face After 2021 Makeover
In 2021, this neighborhood spot was renovated as part of Mayor Sylvester Turner's Complete Communities initiative - a program focused on improving parks across Houston's underserved areas.
The refresh brought several welcome improvements to the park. The playground equipment got a complete upgrade, giving the little ones a safer, more modern place to burn off energy (though keep in mind it's best suited for younger children).
Basketball enthusiasts weren't left out either - the basketball court received a new roof and improved playing surface, making those pickup games a whole lot more enjoyable. The renovation also added a pergola for some much-needed shade, new park furniture, updated fencing, and landscaping that's given the whole place a fresher feel.
Small Park, Solid Amenities
Despite its compact size, Malone Park offers several useful amenities. Picnic tables and barbecue pits are available for casual weekend get-togethers or family lunches under the Texas sky.
Four-legged friends are welcome too! The park is dog-friendly, so you can bring your pup along for some outdoor time, adding another dimension to this community space.
Art in the Park
One of the coolest additions from the renovation? The public artwork created by local artist Israel McCloud. This artistic touch connects perfectly with the Third Ward's rich cultural heritage and adds something special to your park visit.
Far From Just Green Space
At just 0.69 acres, Malone Park might be modest in size, but its importance to the community can't be overstated. It is a gathering spot that brings neighbors together and provides much-needed recreational space in an area that historically hasn't had its fair share of parks.
When well-maintained, this little park provides a pleasant retreat for nearby residents looking to relax, play, or simply enjoy a moment of calm in the heart of the Third Ward.
