About the Location
A Hidden Natural Area
Situated in League City, Texas, the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center spans 148 acres along the south shore of Clear Creek. This peaceful area - formerly known as the Davis tract - is one of the last substantial undeveloped properties with quality wetlands in the region.
The park features a mix of ecosystems, from riparian coastal flatwoods to estuarine wetland habitats bordering Clear Creek. These wetlands aren't just pretty to look at - they function as crucial nurseries for numerous fish species, playing an important role in the local ecosystem.
Wildlife Wonderland
Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty to observe here. The diverse habitats here attract an impressive variety of birds, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching. Keep your eyes peeled for Sandhill cranes, great blue herons, ibises, and American egrets going about their day. The great white herons, owls, and various songbirds that nest and feed here add to the natural symphony.
On rare lucky days, you might even spot endangered whooping cranes that occasionally visit. The large isolated pond near Clear Creek draws in ducks, pelicans, and various shore birds and wading birds, creating a vibrant avian community.
The eastern wetlands aren't just for birds - they're home to mammals like deer, bobcats, coyotes, and raccoons. One of the park's simple joys is catching glimpses of deer families wandering through the landscape, a gentle reminder of the wild world existing alongside our urban lives.
What You'll Find Here
A 1.3-mile concrete trail (about 2 miles round trip) winds through the park, excellent for birding and observation. The path is fully accessible and thoughtfully designed with bird blinds at strategic points, allowing you to observe wildlife without disturbing them. Three dedicated bird observation sites are positioned within the park to maximize your wildlife viewing opportunities.
The paved path meanders through wooded areas, creating a surprisingly immersive natural experience despite being within city limits. Open daily from 7AM to 7PM, the park offers ample time for nature observation, picnicking, or simply enjoying a moment of tranquility away from the bustle of everyday life.
The Story Behind the Park
This natural haven came into being following a land acquisition in 2005, made possible through grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The City of League City, Galveston County, and the Galveston Bay Estuary Program provided additional funding, collaborating to preserve this ecological treasure for future generations.
