About the Location
Park Overview
Nestled in Lubbock, Texas, McAlister Dog Park is a refreshing new addition to the city's outdoor spaces. You'll find this pup paradise at 6007 Marsha Sharp Freeway, tucked into the northeast corner of McAlister Park. Spanning about 5 acres, there's plenty of room for four-legged friends to stretch their legs and burn off energy. Since its opening, the park has been popular with dog owners, with its clean, well-maintained grounds.
Park Layout
The designers of this park clearly had all dogs in mind when planning the space. It's thoughtfully divided into three distinct sections: a spacious area for big dogs to romp around, a separate section where small dogs can play without feeling overwhelmed, and a dedicated agility training course for the more athletic canines. Safety is a priority here, with double-gated entrances at each section - a feature helpful for preventing unexpected escapes.
This separation allows dogs of all sizes to play without intimidation or anxiety. Each area is generously sized, giving dogs the freedom to sprint, play fetch, or make new furry friends without feeling cramped.
Amenities
Both humans and dogs are well taken care of at McAlister. Water fountains are scattered throughout the park to keep thirsty pups hydrated (though these are typically turned off during the colder winter months). Waste stations are conveniently positioned around the grounds, making it easy to keep the park clean and pleasant for everyone.
Human companions haven't been forgotten either. You'll discover comfortable benches to relax on while watching your dog play, and covered picnic areas in each section offer welcome relief from the Texas sun. The park also features clean, family-accessible restrooms, however be aware these may close during winter.
Events
The park occasionally hosts community gatherings, including seasonal celebrations like Halloween events. These provide opportunities to socialize both your dog and yourself.
History
McAlister Dog Park opened its gates on August 19, 2022. The design includes both recreational areas and practical facilities for dogs and their owners.
Future Plans
McAlister Dog Park is just the beginning of a larger vision for the area. Future additions to the broader McAlister Park may include a food truck area for when you work up an appetite, covered basketball courts and pickleball courts for the sports enthusiasts, and an indoor sensory playground called Milestones.
