Tucked within Texas Tech University's sprawling campus in Lubbock sits Memorial Circle - not your typical park, but a meaningful green space with a story to tell. Since its dedication in 1948, this circular sanctuary has stood as a solemn tribute to Texas Tech students who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.

The Circle's Iconic Centerpiece

At the heart of this peaceful space stands the bronze sculpture "Riding into the Sunset" - a captivating depiction of Will Rogers atop his trusty horse Soapsuds. Crafted by talented sculptor Electra Waggoner Biggs, there's a bit of clever positioning at play here: the statue faces southwest so that, as campus legend has it, Rogers appears to be riding off into the Texas sunset. It's these little touches that give the place its character.

Ringing the circle is a simple road, with thoughtfully landscaped areas featuring trees and seasonal flower beds that bring color to this reflective space.

Where Campus Life Converges

Despite its commemorative nature, Memorial Circle pulses with university life as a natural gathering spot for students. It functions as the backdrop for numerous campus events and cherished traditions during the year. One particularly moving custom sees new graduates placing flowers at the base of the Will Rogers statue as they embark on their post-college journeys.

Honoring Those Who Served

The circle's role as a military tribute has expanded over time. In recent years, Texas Tech has enhanced the memorial aspect with additions including a Veterans Tribute Walk and a Wall of Honor. These thoughtful extensions strengthen the circle's purpose as a place where visitors can pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of military members through the generations.
