About The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney in Mckinney
The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney is a unique botanical attraction located in McKinney, Texas. The centerpiece of this initiative is the World Collection Park, a seven-acre park that opened in June 2011 in the Craig Ranch area of McKinney. This park is home to all known species and varieties of crape myrtles in the world, making it a significant horticultural resource.
The park features wide walking paths that weave through various collections of crape myrtles. These collections are marked with informative signs that explain each area, providing an educational experience for visitors. The layout includes several spots with benches, allowing visitors to rest and enjoy the beauty of the park.
One of the park's highlights is a rare white Natchez crape myrtle, donated by the U.S. National Arboretum. This special tree is planted in its own bricked bed area, framed by the opening in the park's entry wall, and marked with a plaque.
The Crape Myrtle Trails extend beyond the World Collection Park, with plantings throughout McKinney. The heaviest concentrations can be found along Eldorado Parkway between Highway 5 (McDonald Street) on the east to Ridge Road on the west. There are also significant plantings on Hardin Road, Ridge Road, Collin McKinney Parkway, and Stonebridge Drive.
Visitors can see crape myrtles blooming as early as late May, continuing well into the fall. The peak bloom typically occurs in late June and early July. In November, the trees provide an additional visual treat with their fall colors.
The park is open year-round during daylight hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing beauty of the crape myrtles throughout the seasons.
