About the Location

World Collection Park

Found in the Craig Ranch area, the World Collection Park is the central point of The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney. Opened in June 2011, this seven-acre botanical gem houses every known species and variety of crape myrtle on the planet - pretty impressive for plant enthusiasts and casual nature lovers alike.

As you wander along the wide, winding paths, you'll discover informative signs that tell the story of each collection. Several benches are available where you can sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. While it's not massive, the park's intimate size creates a peaceful retreat meant for clearing your head with a gentle stroll.

Notable Features

Keep an eye out for the white Natchez crape myrtle - a rare beauty donated by the U.S. National Arboretum. This special tree has earned its own bricked bed, strategically placed to be framed by the park's entry wall opening. A plaque marks its significance, making it hard to miss.

Summer visits feature vibrant colors when the crape myrtles are in full bloom. If you stick around until dusk, you might be lucky enough to spot some of the local residents - rabbits hopping about and fireflies lighting up the adjacent wooded areas as evening falls.

Visitor Amenities

Feel like having a picnic? The grassy areas make great spots to spread out a blanket, although you won't find picnic tables here. Bringing your four-legged friend along? No problem - dog stations with waste bags are scattered around the park for visitors with leashed pets.

Note that there aren't any restroom facilities within the park itself, so plan accordingly. The compact layout makes this spot ideal for a quick nature fix or a leisurely stroll rather than an all-day hiking adventure.

Beyond the Park

The Crape Myrtle Trails extend well beyond the park's boundaries, threading throughout McKinney. You'll find the densest concentrations along Eldorado Parkway between Highway 5 (McDonald Street) and Ridge Road. Other notable stretches include Hardin Road, Ridge Road, Collin McKinney Parkway, and Stonebridge Drive - all showcasing these beautiful trees.

Seasonal Highlights

Crape myrtles start showing off their blooms as early as late May and continue their display well into fall. For the most spectacular experience, aim for late June to early July when the flowers reach peak bloom, with different colors making their appearance at various times.

Don't write off a November visit either - the trees put on a second show with their fall colors, proving these trails are worth exploring across multiple seasons. For the absolute best views, though, July is your golden month when the flowers reach their colorful crescendo.
