About the Location
Play & Sports Areas
Spreading across 60 acres, Kiwanis Park features four lighted baseball fields where both organized leagues and friendly pickup games take place throughout the season. The well-kept diamonds have become a staple for local sports enthusiasts.
Kids have plenty to explore in the large playground area, which cleverly splits into two distinct zones: a modern play structure with wood chips that's great for the little ones, and a more adventurous metal setup in a sand area where older kids can test their limits. From slides and swings to intricate climbing structures and even a thrilling mini zip line swing, there's something to keep everyone entertained.
There's also a basketball court on the grounds, but it could use a bit of TLC according to regular visitors.
Gathering Spots
Need a place for your next family reunion? The park features a large picnic shelter with 10 tables, plus three smaller shelters dotted throughout the grounds. The main pavilion can be reserved through the city website if you're planning something special. It's worth noting that these spaces fill up quickly during peak seasons.
When hunger strikes, fire up one of the three barbecue grills and enjoy an outdoor feast. The picnic areas are typically clean and well-maintained, with regularly emptied trash cans - always a plus when you're trying to enjoy the great outdoors.
What Makes It Special
Perhaps the most charming feature of Kiwanis Park is its prairie dog town - the only one you'll find in Wichita Falls' park system. These adorable creatures have become quite the attraction, with some rebellious prairie dogs even establishing a "splinter colony" beyond their designated area, making surprise appearances within the park.
If you're into kite flying, you're in luck! This is the only spot in the city with an area designated exclusively for flying kites, offering clear skies and open spaces for your high-flying adventures.
History buffs might appreciate the old cemetery tucked away at the back of the park, adding a touch of local heritage to your visit.
Practical Info
You'll find two public restrooms across the park, however they're fairly basic and sometimes closed seasonally.
On hot Texas days, the park's abundant shaded areas are a welcome relief, making it possible to enjoy outdoor time even when the sun is blazing.
One heads-up: during baseball season, parking can get tight, with many cars ending up on grassy areas. If you're coming for a game or event, arriving early is your best bet.
With its expansive green spaces and diverse amenities, Kiwanis Park has options for just about everyone throughout the year. The well-maintained grounds and relaxed atmosphere make it popular with locals.
