About the Location

A Hillside Haven with a View

Found in the East Bench neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Donner Trail Park spans a generous 14.27 acres at the foot of the Wasatch foothills near Emigration Canyon. The panoramic views of the Salt Lake Valley from here are impressive, especially during golden-hour sunsets when the sky fills with rich colors.

What really stands out about this park is the peaceful vibe. It's a quiet space where locals come when they want to step away from the city buzz without traveling far. Despite being relatively close to downtown, it feels like a world away.

A Piece of Pioneer History

There's something special about walking grounds with historical significance. The park is named after the Donner Party - those pioneering Americans who made their way through this area back in 1846. Within a mile of the park, you can find Donner Hill and the Donner Hill Marker, close to the iconic "This is the Place" monument - adding a layer of historical depth to your visit.

What You'll Find There

A gentle walking trail traces the park's perimeter, making it ideal for an easy stroll or walking your four-legged friend. Within the grounds, you'll spot picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch with a side of mountain scenery.

Got kids? They'll love the two playgrounds that offer plenty of space to burn off energy. And if you're visiting in winter, bring a sled! The natural slope transforms into a popular sledding hill when snow blankets the ground.

Bringing Your Dog Along

Dog lovers, this is your spot. The park welcomes furry visitors and provides stations for picking up after your pet. Just a heads-up though - you might notice larger dogs running off-leash in the evenings. For everyone's comfort and safety, it's best to keep your own pup leashed during your visit.

Looking to the Future

Exciting changes are coming to Donner Trail Park through a voter-approved Parks, Trails, and Open Space General Obligation Bond. One of the most thoughtful additions planned is a Memorial Tree Grove - a space where community members can honor loved ones while enhancing the natural landscape.

Art in the Outdoors

As part of the reimagination process, artist Adam Kuby is creating a public art installation tentatively called "Journey Lines." The design will feature flowing berms, carefully positioned stones, and natural boulders that complement the surrounding environment.

These artistic elements aren't just for looking at - they'll create winding exploration paths and provide more places to sit and appreciate the wildlife and natural beauty that make this park special.
