About the Location
History and Dedication
Situated in the heart of the Rose Park neighborhood in northwest Salt Lake City, Steenblik Park is a cozy little pocket park that's been bringing joy to locals since 1984. Created with federal block grant funding, this charming green space has a meaningful backstory.
The park honors Joseph F. Steenblik, a cherished community figure who called this area home since 1908. He wasn't just any resident - Joseph poured his heart into youth activities (especially scouting) and genuinely cared about making Rose Park a better place for everyone.
His fingerprints are all over the neighborhood, having helped organize and build important community hubs like the Rose Park Library, Rose Park Gymnasium, and the local church Stake House.
Artistic Touches
What makes this park stand out? Look for the whimsical "Dairy Cats" installation - four bronze feline statues standing five feet tall, created in 2007 by local artist Day Christiansen. These seated cats aren't just random art; they're a nod to the mouser cats that once kept farms (and presumably the Steenblik Dairy) free of pests.
There's something delightfully unexpected about stumbling upon these bronze cats in a neighborhood park. They've become a quiet highlight that gives Steenblik Park its unique character.
Kid-Friendly Play Area
If you're bringing little ones, you'll appreciate the playground with its swings, multiple slides, and play structure. The bark-covered ground makes for softer landings, and the equipment is particularly well-suited for younger children.
Timing your visit? The park catches nice shade throughout the day, but morning hours offer the best coverage - a welcome relief during Utah's toasty summer days.
Everyday Comforts
The park keeps things simple but functional with a picnic table where you can enjoy lunch or an afternoon snack. Garbage cans are conveniently placed throughout, making it easy to keep the space clean.
Dog lovers are welcome to bring their four-legged friends for some fresh air, but note that there are no public restrooms available, so plan accordingly.
The Neighborhood Vibe
Rose Park itself is worth appreciating - a neighborhood with distinctive architectural harmony, mostly one-story red brick houses built after World War II when affordable family homes were in high demand.
Today, this area boasts one of the highest rates of racial and ethnic diversity in the Salt Lake valley. Though modest in size, Steenblik Park represents a community gathering spot - a clean, quaint breathing space within the vibrant neighborhood fabric.
It's not a destination park with bells and whistles, but that's part of its charm - a simple green space where local families come to play and relax.
