About the Location

History and Dedication

Steenblik Park is a pocket park located in the heart of the Rose Park neighborhood in the northwest quadrant of Salt Lake City, Utah. The park was established in 1984 using federal block grant funding.

It was named after Joseph F. Steenblik, a prominent local figure who lived in the area since 1908. He was known for his dedication to youth activities, particularly scouting, and his contributions to community development.

Joseph F. Steenblik played a significant role in organizing and building local facilities such as the Rose Park Library, Rose Park Gymnasium, and the local church Stake House.

Park Features

The park features a distinctive art installation called "Dairy Cats", created in 2007 by local artist Day Christiansen. This public art piece consists of four five-foot tall bronze statues of seated cats, representing mouser cats often found on farms.

The installation pays homage to the Steenblik Dairy, which was a longstanding presence in the Rose Park neighborhood.

Neighborhood Setting

Rose Park, where the park is situated, is known for its architectural cohesion, primarily consisting of one-story red brick houses. The neighborhood was developed in the post-World War II era to meet the demand for affordable housing for growing families.

Today, Rose Park boasts one of the highest rates of racial and ethnic diversity in the Salt Lake valley. The park serves as a gathering place for the community, offering a space for recreation and relaxation.

Its location in the vibrant Rose Park neighborhood makes it easily accessible to residents and visitors alike.
