Hensley, who dedicated nearly a decade of service as the City of Alexandria's Director of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities from 1977 until he stepped down in 1986.

Hensley Park is currently undergoing significant renovations. With an investment of over $11 million, the renovations include substantial infrastructure improvements. The project tackles practical issues like stormwater management and drainage problems, expands the parking area (because we've all circled a full lot in frustration), and brings in upgraded sports lighting for those evening games.

The improvements also focus on making the park more accessible with enhanced ADA access and better pathways throughout. Families will appreciate the addition of a new play space, while a second park shelter and a multi-functional court/performance space will create more options for community gatherings.

Safety Features

Safety hasn't taken a backseat in this renovation plan. The park is installing 30-foot netting and fencing around the athletic fields - a smart move that will keep softballs and other sports equipment from making unexpected visits to nearby roads or passing cars.

On any given day, you might find adult sports leagues battling it out on the fields, high school softball teams practicing their swing, soccer associations working on their footwork, or lacrosse practices in full swing.
