About the Location
Riverside Escape
Located next to the Potomac River in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Waterfront Park is where history meets tranquility. This scenic space seamlessly blends the original King Street Park and Waterfront Park with the former Old Dominion Boat Club grounds, creating a fluid connection between Old Town's bustling historic streets and the serene waterfront.
Spanning 1.37 acres, this little oasis offers some seriously Instagram-worthy views of the Potomac River, Washington D.C., and National Harbor. It's an excellent spot to catch your breath, people-watch, or simply soak in the natural beauty that makes this area so special.
What You'll Find
The park features an open plaza and a waterfront promenade where you can meander along the shore and take in those river views. Need a break from the sun? You'll find strategically placed shade structures throughout the park. What's cool is the park's adaptable space that transforms during the year for different events - from live music to seasonal festivals.
Kids (and adults who still act like kids) will appreciate the large grassy area that's meant for running around or impromptu picnics. You'll come across plenty of benches and swing seats scattered throughout, so claiming a spot to rest your feet is rarely an issue.
At sunset, the riverside lights create a beautiful glow over the water. It's no wonder this has become a gathering spot for both locals and visitors alike.
Nature Notes
Keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife, especially the waterfowl. The ducks and geese that call this area home aren't shy - they're practically locals themselves. During spring and summer, the park blooms with flowers and leafy trees, adding splashes of color to your visit.
Just a heads-up: the park sometimes experiences flooding during high tides, so you might want to check conditions before visiting after heavy rain.
History Underfoot
As you wander around, you'll notice nods to Alexandria's maritime heritage, including a statue of a ship builder and old anchors that remind visitors of the area's seafaring past. The park connects to riverside walking trails with informational signs that tell the story of Alexandria - both its role in early American trade and the more sobering aspects of its history, including its involvement in the slave trade.
Around the Park
One of the best things about Waterfront Park is its location. You're surrounded by a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops, making it easy to grab a coffee or bite to eat while exploring. Dog owners, rejoice - your leashed four-legged friends are more than welcome here.
There are public restrooms near the gazebo area, however they can get busy when the park is hopping. While there are picnic tables and seating areas throughout, weekend warriors might find themselves competing for spots during peak times and special events.
Getting here is a breeze with the free King Street Trolley connecting the Metro station to the waterfront area.
Looking Ahead
The park is set for some upgrades in the future, including flood protection infrastructure and additional amenities. This will mean temporary closures, but the improvements will help ensure this Alexandria space remains a waterfront destination for years to come.
