Elizabeth River Park
About Elizabeth River Park
Riverside Charm
Set in Chesapeake, Virginia, Elizabeth River Park offers a peaceful escape along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. This 8-acre waterfront park is a nice spot to spend a few hours - or even a whole day - soaking in nature while still being close to city amenities.
The park sits in the shadow of the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge, an impressive structure that towers 169 feet above the water, connecting Chesapeake and Portsmouth. The bridge isn't just functional - it's become part of the park experience. Many visitors enjoy starting their walk here before crossing the bridge (completely free for pedestrians!) to take in those breathtaking views from above.
For Boating Enthusiasts
For those wanting to get out on the water, the park offers good facilities. The park has one of Hampton Roads' busiest boat ramps, with a concrete double-wide design that makes launching relatively easy. There's plenty of trailer parking, and since it's open 24/7, you can hit the water whenever inspiration strikes. The ramps are wide and well-lit, meant for those early morning fishing expeditions or evening cruises.
The proximity to downtown Norfolk makes this an especially convenient launching point for exploring the Elizabeth River - just pull up, prep your boat at the designated areas, and you're good to go.
Fishing and Crabbing Spots
Not bringing a boat? No problem. The crabbing and fishing pier extends right into the river, offering a prime spot to cast your line without needing a fishing license. While it's not the longest pier around, it provides a pleasant place to relax with your fishing rod, whether you're a seasoned angler or just trying it out for fun.
The park comes fully equipped with a certified fish weigh station and a fish cleaning station with water access - practical touches that serious fishers will appreciate. There's even an on-site bait shop where you can grab bait, tackle, ice, and snacks, making spontaneous fishing trips totally doable.
Beyond the Water
Dry land has plenty to offer too. Kids will love the modern playground equipment, suitable for various ages. For the fitness-minded, a cardio fitness area with multiple stations lets you squeeze in a workout with a view.
A paved walking path winds around the park, offering lovely views of both the river and the Jordan Bridge. If you're planning a gathering, several picnic shelters and gazebos are available for rent - well-suited for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or just a fancy picnic with friends. The shade these areas provide makes outdoor dining comfortable even on warmer days.
You'll come across clean, climate-controlled restroom facilities throughout the park - a small but significant detail that makes longer visits much more comfortable. And for those bringing four-legged friends, there's a dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs, however you should note that it requires an annual membership.
The Vibe
What really makes Elizabeth River Park special is its atmosphere. Despite being near industrial and port areas, there's a surprising tranquility here. The sunsets are particularly magical, with golden light spilling across the water creating postcard-worthy scenes.
The thoughtful layout provides plenty of open space while still offering various zones for different activities. It's this blend of water access, recreational options, and natural beauty that makes Elizabeth River Park something of a hidden retreat in Chesapeake - a place where you can fish, play, exercise, or simply sit and watch the ships go by under that towering bridge.
