About the Location

Civil War Heritage

Skiffes Creek Redoubt was constructed in early April 1862 during the American Civil War as part of Confederate Major General John Bankhead Magruder's defensive line on the Virginia Peninsula. It formed part of the Skiffes Creek Line, built to defend the Confederate Mulberry Island-James River flank during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.

Historic Fortifications

The earthwork fortification offers visitors a glimpse into Civil War-era military engineering and strategy. The redoubt has been preserved as a small historic site within an industrial park area.

While limited in size, it provides an opportunity to view and appreciate Civil War earthworks up close.

Visitor Experience

Visitors can explore the grounds to observe the remaining earthen fortifications and gain insight into their strategic importance during the Peninsula Campaign. The site serves as a tangible link to the area's Civil War history, allowing guests to stand where soldiers once defended key positions over 150 years ago.
