Chesapeake Bay Beach Access

Tucked away in Norfolk's Ocean View area, Sarah Constant Beach Park offers a lovely stretch of sandy shoreline along the Chesapeake Bay. It's one of three beach parks maintained by the City of Norfolk, alongside Community Beach Park and Ocean View Beach Park.

If you're looking for a more peaceful beach experience, Sarah Constant tends to be quieter and more secluded than other beaches in the region - a fantastic escape from the usual crowds.

Swimming and Recreation

The waters at Sarah Constant are relatively calm, making it a great spot for swimming and wading. There's a natural sandbar extending about 50 yards out that creates a shallow swimming area - particularly safe for little ones.

Just note that unlike Ocean View Beach Park, there aren't any lifeguards on duty here, so you'll be swimming at your own risk. The gentle waves and shallow water make this a particularly good choice if you're bringing young children along.

Park Amenities

Beyond the beach itself, you'll find some shaded grassy areas fantastic for relaxing or having a picnic. The park offers picnic tables and public grills available on a first-come, first-served basis - nothing fancy, but they get the job done if you're planning to cook outdoors.

There are public restrooms a short walk from the parking area and picnic grounds. While basic (no showers or water fountains here), they provide the necessary convenience for a day at the beach.

The free parking lot is certainly a plus, but it tends to fill up quickly during summer months and weekends, especially after noon. If you're visiting during peak season, arriving early in the morning is your best bet.

Scenic Views and Activities

The views of the Chesapeake Bay from this park are quite beautiful, offering plenty of opportunities for sunbathing, beachcombing, or simply watching ships pass by in the distance. The sunrise over the bay is especially worth catching if you're an early riser - the park provides an excellent vantage point for nature's morning show.

Walking along the shoreline searching for shells and interesting rocks is a simple pleasure that many enjoy here. The peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal spot to clear your mind and just breathe.

Dog-Friendly Beach

Good news for dog owners: Sarah Constant Beach Park welcomes your four-legged friends with some time restrictions. Dogs are allowed on leash before 10 AM and after 6 PM, giving you and your pup the chance to enjoy beach walks during the cooler parts of the day.

Historical Significance

There's a bit of history behind the name - the park commemorates one of the three ships that brought English settlers to Jamestown in 1607. It's a nice blend of colonial history and modern recreation.

While you're in the area, you might also want to check out the nearby Ocean View Fishing Pier, which extends into the Chesapeake Bay and offers additional ways to enjoy your time by the water.
