About Lone Star Lakes Park
Natural Features
Tucked away in the Chuckatuck section of northern Suffolk, Virginia lies Lone Star Lakes Park, a sprawling 1,063-acre natural haven. What makes this park special is its series of 11 freshwater lakes, originally dug out for marl before the City of Suffolk purchased them for water supply and recreation.
These lakes range from cozy 3-acre pools to impressive 50-acre expanses, covering about 490 acres of water surface in total. The park is a fascinating mix of ecosystems - freshwater lakes blend into saltwater creeks and forested areas, creating homes for all sorts of wildlife. We've seen deer wandering through the woods, turtles sunning themselves by the water, or even tiny crabs scuttling along certain shorelines. crabs scuttling along certain shorelines.
Trails and Wildlife Viewing
The park's extensive trail network offers a wonderful escape into nature. Whether you prefer paved paths or natural surfaces, you can find trails ranging from flat, easy strolls to more challenging routes with hills and tree roots.
The Wilderness Path and Wildlife Habitat Trail are well-marked options worth exploring. As you wander through the changing landscapes, you'll find perfect spots for wildlife watching and photography. There's something incredibly calming about being surrounded by nature here - it's a wonderful break from city life.
If cycling is more your speed, you'll appreciate the varied and extensive biking trails around the park. Hikers can tackle the five-mile trail system that loops through wooded areas, rewarding you with beautiful views overlooking the lakes.
Fishing Opportunities
Fishing enthusiasts, you're in for a treat at Lone Star Lakes. The various lakes are home to largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and sunfish. What's particularly interesting is that some lakes, like Crane Lake and Cedar Creek, connect to Chuckatuck Creek, bringing in saltwater and brackish water species including striped bass, white perch, puppy drum, and speckled trout.
Each lake has its own fishing personality: Crystal Lake is your go-to for sunfish and bluegill, while Butler Track has earned a reputation for excellent bass fishing. If you're after saltwater species, try Cedar Creek at high tide, or head to Crane Lake where good shore fishing spots for trout can be found across from the boat ramp.
Water Activities
The lakes aren't just for fishing - they're ideal for all kinds of water fun. You can find boat launches scattered throughout the park, making it easy to get your small watercraft in the water. The calm lake surfaces create ideal conditions for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). The flat water is especially welcoming if you're a beginner or simply looking for a peaceful paddle away from currents and waves.
Recreational Facilities
Beyond water activities, the park offers diverse recreational options. Equestrians can enjoy a dedicated four-mile horse trail, while archery enthusiasts can visit the archery range run by the Kingsboro Bowmen. There's even a model airplane flying field for those interested in aerial hobbies.
When you're ready for a break, you'll discover picnic areas with tables and grills within the park - meant for enjoying a meal surrounded by nature. Benches positioned strategically across the grounds offer spots to sit and soak in the scenery.
If you're visiting with kids, head to the playground near the horse trail area, which provides a fun space for younger visitors to burn off energy. The park offers a variety of outdoor experiences in a beautiful natural setting.
Amenities
When visiting, you can find multiple parking areas along the loop road, but don't expect formal parking lots. Most visitors simply park along the street or on gravel paths near the lakes.
As for restrooms, the park provides portable toilets (port-a-potties) at various locations within the grounds. If you're bringing your four-legged friend, that's perfectly fine - just remember that dogs must remain on leash at all times. You should also bring your own waste bags, as collection stations are limited around the park.
