About the Location
A Community Green Space
Situated in Bellevue, Washington, Surrey Downs Park spans a generous 10.5 acres of recently refreshed greenery. This green space blends recreational areas with natural elements, and is open daily from 6AM to 9PM.
The Great Lawn
At the heart of the park lies the "Great Lawn," a sprawling grassy expanse wrapped by a pedestrian path. This meadow is where life happens - spread out a blanket for a lazy afternoon picnic, toss a frisbee with friends, kick around a soccer ball, or watch your kite dance in the breeze.
The walking path that circles the lawn provides a smooth surface for casual strolls. It's meant for little ones still mastering their bike or scooter skills, and you'll often spot locals walking their four-legged friends along this route.
Scenic Views
The park's thoughtfully designed berms and lookout spots offer more than elevation. On clear days, you can catch breathtaking glimpses of Mount Rainier from various points around the grounds.
From these higher vantage points, you can also watch East Link light rail trains glide by - a simple delight that never fails to captivate younger visitors fascinated by trains.
Rich History
The park's land has an interesting history. A century ago, it was a thriving filbert orchard. Some of those historic trees still stand today, joined by newly planted filberts that help preserve the area's heritage.
After its orchard days, the property served as an elementary school from 1962 to 1981, then as a courthouse, before eventually transforming into the park you see today.
Playground Area
Surrey Downs features a modern playground suited for various age groups. The younger set has their own zone with age-appropriate equipment, while older children can tackle more challenging structures.
The playground includes a popular zipline that's a hit with many children. Rounding out the fun are colorful slides, swings, climbing structures, and an intriguing hydraulic elevator feature that keeps young imaginations engaged.
Recreational Facilities
Got game? The half-court basketball area awaits. The park's thoughtful design includes hills that naturally invite children to roll down them, while flat spaces provide perfect venues for impromptu games.
If you're looking to get your steps in, the paved oval track and network of walking paths make for pleasant exercise routes, while open areas stand ready for whatever activity strikes your fancy.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
The park offers two covered picnic shelters with tables and BBQ grills - good spots for birthday celebrations or family gatherings. Just remember these popular spots operate on a first-come, first-served basis and tend to fill quickly on weekends.
Don't worry if the shelters are taken - additional uncovered picnic tables are scattered around the park, offering plenty of alternatives for outdoor meals and relaxation.
Amenities
Practical needs haven't been overlooked here. Clean restroom facilities ensure comfort during your visit. The small parking lot accommodates about 12-15 vehicles, but you might want to arrive early on busy days as spaces fill quickly.
Your leashed furry friends are welcome too, with many visitors bringing their dogs to enjoy the paths and open spaces together. Thanks to diligent maintenance, the park remains consistently clean and inviting.
Since the City of Bellevue acquired this land in 2005, Surrey Downs Park offers both active recreation areas and quieter natural spaces for the community.
