About the Location
Trail Overview
Tucked away in Renton, Lake Youngs Trailhead Park wraps around Lake Youngs, a sprawling 700-acre reservoir that keeps Seattle's taps flowing with fresh drinking water. While you can't actually access the lake itself (it's fenced off to keep our drinking water pristine), don't let that deter you - the park offers a fantastic trail that loops all the way around the reservoir.
The Lake Youngs Trail stretches a solid 9.3 miles, taking you through a little bit of everything: peaceful wooded sections, stretches along roadways, and paths that wind behind residential neighborhoods.
Trail Features
We love how the trail surface keeps things interesting - you'll traverse everything from wide gravel roads to narrower single-track paths. With approximately 900 feet of elevation gain scattered throughout the loop, it provides just enough challenge without being overwhelming. It's perfect whether you're hiking, jogging, or cycling.
One of the coolest things about this park is the wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, which often find sanctuary within the fenced area around the lake.
Natural Environment
Even on those hot summer days, much of the trail stays comfortably cool thanks to the dense tree canopy providing generous shade along the way.
You won't catch many glimpses of the actual lake while walking - the protective fencing and thick vegetation make sure of that. Still, this park offers a valuable green escape within a semi-urban setting, especially if you're looking for a longer trail experience that won't require driving far from the city.
