About the Location
Breathtaking Views
Situated in Queen Anne, this 1.5-acre gem offers some of the most jaw-dropping panoramic views you'll discover in Seattle. From the upper section, you can take in the city skyline, Lake Union, and the Cascade Mountains while lounging on a grassy lawn or relaxing on one of the benches. It's an excellent spot to unwind with a sandwich or simply sit in quiet appreciation of Seattle's natural beauty.
Many locals consider this viewpoint one of Seattle's best-kept secrets - all the views without the tourist crowds. On clear days, you can spot the iconic Space Needle and even magnificent Mount Rainier in the distance. If you're into photography or just enjoy a good view, try visiting at sunrise or sunset when the light transforms the cityscape into something truly magical.
Winding Pathways
The park cleverly uses its hillside setting, with meandering paths that guide you from the upper viewpoint down to the lower level. As you walk these trails, you'll find yourself surrounded by lush greenery - colorful azaleas, blooming rhododendrons, and if you're lucky, some wild blackberry bushes ripe for the picking in summer months.
There's something almost meditative about these winding paths, with little grassy alcoves where you can stop and catch your breath. The park's design creates distinct zones despite its compact size: open spaces and viewing benches up top, and picnic tables (some sheltered from Seattle's famous rain) and a playground area down below.
Kid-Friendly Zone
Near the 5th Avenue entrance at the bottom of the hill sits a modest playground equipped with slides, monkey bars, and a rock wall. Nothing fancy, but it does the job for families looking to keep the little ones entertained. You should note that the slides can get pretty speedy, and there isn't much shade over the play area during midday - so sunscreen might be a good idea during summer visits.
A Bit of History
The park gets its unique name from Werner H. "Bhy" Kracke, a local resident who donated this land to Seattle in 1971. It's a quiet spot in the Queen Anne neighborhood, popular with those who prefer their scenic viewpoints without the crowds and commotion.
The Experience
What makes Bhy Kracke special is its peaceful atmosphere. Unlike Kerry Park and other famous Seattle viewpoints, you'll rarely have to jockey for position to snap that perfect photo. The park's location, nestled among residential homes, creates a genuine neighborhood feel that's hard to find at more popular tourist destinations.
Dog owners will appreciate the pet-friendly paths where four-legged friends can explore to their heart's content. Just be aware that parking is quite limited - only a few spots exist at the upper entrance, so many visitors simply walk from nearby areas.
The respectful, quiet environment makes this an ideal location for reading a good book, enjoying a low-key picnic, or simply soaking in Seattle's impressive cityscape in a more intimate setting.
