About the Location

Waterfront Urban Oasis

Tucked away at the southern end of Lake Union in Seattle, this 12-acre public park is a breath of fresh air amid the city's concrete landscape. Nestled in the South Lake Union neighborhood, it's a stone's throw from downtown but feels worlds away from the urban hustle.

With a blend of green spaces and waterfront access, Lake Union Park showcases Seattle's cultural, maritime, and industrial heritage. Open from 4AM to 11:30PM daily, it offers a serene escape from city life.

Historical Background

The park officially opened its gates in September 2010, although the land has an interesting backstory. The City of Seattle gradually pieced it together over time, with the final 5 acres coming from the United States Navy in 2000.

The design incorporates elements of the area's history and natural features. The restored shoreline brings back a touch of what the area once was, and the model boat pond has become a favorite spot where you can find both kids and adults equally enchanted.

Cultural Attractions

Beyond its natural setting, the park is home to several cultural institutions. It houses some impressive institutions, including the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) in what used to be the Naval Reserve Building, and the charming Center for Wooden Boats.

Both places offer a window into Seattle's maritime past. MOHAI's exhibits tell fascinating stories about the city's history and innovative spirit, while the Center for Wooden Boats showcases beautiful historic vessels and teaches traditional boatbuilding techniques through hands-on programs.

Water Activities

The waterfront location is a defining feature of the park. There's something mesmerizing about watching seaplanes take off and land on Lake Union, or seeing boats of all sizes glide across the water.

Feel like joining in? The park has a hand-carried boat launch where you can put in your kayak or paddleboard. During summer, the lake comes alive with paddlers, and if you don't have your own equipment, rentals are available nearby.

Recreation and Relaxation

The park's great lawn area is suitable for picnics or lounging with a book. Meandering footpaths invite leisurely strolls with beautiful views of the lake and city skyline.

On warm days, the fountain with water jets is popular with visitors. One of our favorite things to do here is simply sit by the water's edge, watching the world go by while taking in glimpses of the Space Needle from certain spots in the park.

Wildlife and Nature

Even in the heart of the city, nature finds a way. The park attracts a variety of waterfowl - you'll likely spot ducks and geese going about their business along the shoreline.

It's a little pocket of natural habitat within the urban environment. Just a heads-up: watch your step near the water's edge, as the feathered friends do leave their mark on the walkways sometimes.

Accessibility

Getting here couldn't be easier. The South Lake Union Streetcar drops you right at the park, making it super convenient whether you're a local or just exploring Seattle for the day.

If you're driving, there are parking lots nearby, however they can fill up during busy times. Here's a helpful tip: parking is free on Sundays, making weekend visits a little more wallet-friendly.
