About the Location
Features and Facilities
Tucked between East Alder and East Jefferson streets in Seattle's Central District, Powell Barnett Park spans a modest 4.4 acres but packs in plenty of charm. Named in 1969 after civil rights activist and community leader Powell Barnett, this urban oasis offers something for everyone.
The children's play area is definitely a highlight, with complex climbing structures that'll keep kids entertained for hours. There's a safety-padded section specifically designed for the little ones, while some impressively tall climbing challenges will keep older kids engaged too. It provides plenty of activity options.
When summer temperatures climb, the wading pool is particularly popular. Kids splash around while parents chat in the shade - it's especially lively during birthday celebrations. Nearby, you can find a quirky tricycle maze that adds a unique twist to the typical playground experience.
Sports enthusiasts can shoot some hoops at the well-maintained KD Basketball Court, which regularly attracts local players showing off their skills. There's also a generous open field ideal for frisbee games, impromptu soccer matches, or just sprawling out with a good book.
Need to work off last night's dessert? The park features outdoor fitness equipment along an exercise path, making it easy to squeeze in a workout while the kids play. And when hunger strikes, head to the BBQ corner at the field's edge - ideal for grilling up lunch while enjoying the greenery around you.
When nature calls, you won't have to leave the park. The ADA accessible restrooms are housed in a whimsical castle-shaped building next to the play area. It's practical, inclusive, and adds a touch of fun to necessary facilities.
History
This land wasn't always destined to be a park. It was originally earmarked for a junior high school but was first developed as a running track and athletic field for nearby Garfield High School. In 1962, after Garfield got its own playfield, the site needed a new purpose.
The Department of Parks purchased the land in 1966, and thanks to the Central Area Motivation Program, community-driven improvements began taking shape the very next year.
Recent Renovations
The park got a serious facelift in 2006 when community volunteers partnered with Starbucks for a comprehensive renovation. This team effort brought new play equipment, refreshed pathways, and updated facilities across the park. The result? A revitalized space that better serves the neighborhood.
Visitor Experience
One thing you'll notice is how clean and well-kept the park is, thanks to regular maintenance from Parks & Recreation staff. Mature shade trees create comfortable spots even on those rare sunny Seattle days.
If you're driving, be aware that street parking exists but can be scarce, especially on weekends and during peak hours. No car? No problem. The park is easily accessible via public transportation, with a downtown bus route stopping nearby.
Powell Barnett Park has earned its reputation as a family-friendly escape in the Central District. With spaces that accommodate children of all ages, it's a safe, enjoyable green space that brings the community together year-round.
