About the Location

A Historic Gem

Cannon Hill Park is a scenic green space located in the South Hill neighborhood of Spokane, Washington. Spanning 13.11 acres, this neighborhood park offers a tranquil retreat for local residents and visitors alike.

The park has a rich history, originally serving as a brickyard in the 1880s. Henry Brook discovered a clay deposit on the site, which was used to produce bricks for rebuilding downtown Spokane after the Great Fire of 1889.

From Brickyard to Beautiful Park

When the clay ran out, the brickyard closed, leaving a shallow depression that would later become a key feature of the park. In 1907, the renowned Olmsted Brothers were commissioned to design the park.

Their plan included a stone shelter, two pergolas, and a children's wading pool. The natural depression left by the brickyard was transformed into a shallow pool, perfect for children to cool off in during summer and for ice skating in winter.

Natural Beauty

Today, Cannon Hill Park is characterized by its meandering meadows, stone-built footbridges, and a rich canopy of deciduous trees. The park's landscape creates a picturesque setting reminiscent of a painting.

A central feature of the park is its duck pond, which adds to the park's serene atmosphere. The park is seamlessly integrated into the surrounding neighborhood, contributing to the area's charm and character.

It serves as a focal point for the community, offering a space for quiet recreation and enjoyment of nature.
