About the Location
Location and History
Nestled along the Spokane River in the Peaceful Valley neighborhood, Redband Park is a little slice of tranquility in Spokane, Washington. Known as Glover Field until 2017, the park got its new name to celebrate the native redband trout that spawn in these waters - a pretty cool nod to local ecology if you ask us.
With the gentle sound of flowing water as your constant companion, this quiet corner offers an excellent escape from Spokane's growing urban energy.
Notable Features
The star of the show here is definitely "Redband Rising," a striking 12-foot sculpture installed in 2019 at the heart of Redband Plaza. Created by artist Chris Anderson, this impressive piece goes beyond looking good - it helps educate visitors about the park's namesake fish and their habitat.
The park also houses a nicely renovated Little League baseball field and a newer raft and paddle launch that's been a game-changer for river access. If you're into kayaking, rafting, or canoeing, you'll appreciate how easy it is to get onto the water from here.
Amenities and Accessibility
There's plenty of grassy space well-suited for lounging around, playing catch, or having a picnic. While there's only one official picnic table tucked in the corner, the open lawns provide ample room to spread out a blanket and enjoy lunch with a view.
Getting around is no problem - the park features paved pathways that make it wheelchair accessible throughout. Parking is somewhat limited with just one handicap spot available, but it's usually enough for this smaller park's needs.
Cultural Significance
Redband Park is not only a pretty place to hang out but also part of a broader effort to revitalize the area. Keep an eye out for the interpretive signs that tell the story of the redband trout and explain the site's importance to the Spokane Tribe of Indians.
Trail Connections
Feel like exploring beyond the park? Redband is a key trailhead for a fantastic loop that connects Peaceful Valley to Sandifur Bridge. Cross the Spokane River and you can make your way back downtown via Kendall Yards and Riverfront Park - a great route for a leisurely walk or bike ride.
Recreation
The park offers something for just about everyone. You might catch an organized softball game on the baseball field, or simply find folks enjoying the riverside scenery. The shoreline is great for examining interesting rocks and taking in river views, while the open grassy areas give dogs plenty of space to run around and play.
