About the Location
Park Overview
Located in the heart of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Enos Colburn Park (locally known simply as Colburn Park) spreads across a generous 61.4 acres of land. This spacious green space has options for just about everyone, whether you're looking to break a sweat or simply unwind among the trees.
What we appreciate about this place is how it manages to feel like a woodland retreat despite sitting right in the middle of Green Bay. The moment you step in, the hustle of urban life seems to fade.
A Bit of History
The park's roots stretch back to the late 1930s, although it wasn't until 1956 that it got its current name. It was renamed after Enos Colburn, who dedicated years of service as both a member and president of the Board of Park Commissioners.
This naming wasn't just a formality - it acknowledged how deeply the park had become woven into the community fabric.
Trails and Natural Beauty
One of the first things you'll notice here are the walking paths that meander through wooded sections. There's a pleasant contrast between feeling like you're in a forest while still being within city limits.
The layout balances spaces for active recreation with quieter areas for relaxation. Thanks to the abundant tree cover, you'll discover plenty of shade even during the peak of summer - a true blessing on those scorching Wisconsin days.
If you're lucky and keep your eyes peeled, you might spot local wildlife going about their day. Some visitors have even reported seeing an albino squirrel - quite the rare sight!
Take a Dip
When summer temperatures rise, the park's outdoor swimming pool becomes the place to be. The pool area comes complete with shaded seating where you can relax between dips.
The staff includes friendly lifeguards and instructors who offer swimming lessons for those looking to improve their skills. Just remember to bring about $4-5 for admission if you're planning to swim.
Sports Galore
Athletic types will feel right at home with the variety of well-kept sports facilities. You'll come across fields for baseball and soccer, along with courts for tennis, basketball, and volleyball.
For something a bit different, try your hand at the bocce ball courts or horseshoe pits - both offer a fun change of pace from typical park activities.
The baseball diamonds deserve special mention for their excellent maintenance and cleanliness, making them a favorite for both organized leagues and casual players.
Family Fun
Planning a family day out? The park offers several picnic areas with plenty of tables and a pavilion you can reserve for gatherings. These spots provide a wonderful backdrop for everything from birthday celebrations to casual family meals.
The kids won't be bored either, thanks to the spacious playground equipment that's thoughtfully divided into sections for different age groups. There's plenty of room for little ones to run, climb, and make new friends.
When winter blankets Green Bay in snow, the park transforms into a cold-weather playground with designated areas for cross-country skiing and ice skating.
Find Your Path
The extensive network of paved trails connects all areas of the park, making it easy to explore everything Colburn has to offer. These paths are ideal whether you're going for a serious jog or just enjoying a leisurely stroll.
The trails through the wooded sections offer a particularly peaceful experience - great for clearing your mind after a long day. Dog owners often bring their furry friends along, however you'll need to keep them leashed throughout your visit.
Practical Details
You'll come across multiple parking lots across the grounds, so accessing your favorite area of the park is never a hassle. The park is divided into three main sections, each with its own distinct character and amenities.
Restroom facilities are available, but they may only be open during organized sporting events, so plan accordingly. Regular security patrols help ensure everyone can enjoy the park safely.
Community Hub
Situated centrally in Green Bay, Colburn Park represents an accessible meeting ground for residents from all corners of the city. During the year, it hosts various community events including cross-country meets and other organized activities, strengthening the bonds between neighbors and enhancing Green Bay's quality of life.
